California Interstate speed limit towing 4 down
I know California has a 55MPH speed limit for vehicles towing a trailer, but is towing a car 4 down considered by California a Trailer? Regulations seem complex, but that is California!

Great question. I pull a Jeep behind my CS and are always doing 65+ and have never got a ticket. So I think 65 is ok. Up and down I-5 and the 101, never a problem!

55mph would be the limit, and stay out of the carpool lanes. You might get away with doing 65, but the law is 55. Think of a semi truck towing a trailer, all the trailer tires or on the ground, speed limit for them is still 55.
Safe travels!

55 is the limit for all vehicles towing anything. I just fall in line with the trucks and set my cruise to their speed, usually about 62 MPH. My CRV is rated for 65 max when being towed so I am fine with 62. Towing is the car pool lane is illegal and will probably get you a citation.

Towing anything with anything is 55mph in California.
I go 55-62 with the big rigs and never had a issue.

Going 67 in a 65 mph zone got me my only moving violation since high school ( I was 69 at the time). Cost me $468 for 12 mph over the 55 mph limit.

AS already mentioned it's definitely 55 max while towing in Cali. Stay out of the fast lane too.

The maximum speed limit, unless posted lower, for towing any vehicle in CA is 55 mph (see section B of the attached portion of VC 22406).
I do a lot of driving in CA (4-5 trips per year) as we still have family there. It is my understand that almost always, speeding tickets that involve violation of 55 mph speed limit are given out on two lane, undivided highways with not more than one through lane of travel in each direction with speed limits of 65 mph for regular traffic.
When I'm traveling on interstate highways with 65-70 mph speed limits in unincorporated areas I am usually doing 62-63 mph. I have been observed and passed by many CHP officers, and have never received a ticket.
In fact what's interesting when I'm on those interstates and other 65 mph divided highways, like Hwy 395, I am constantly being passed by four wheelers towing TTs, Fivers, Boat trailers and other trailers that are doing at least the posted speed limit for regular traffic. I have only seen a few that were pulled over, but they were way over the posted speed limit.
By bottom line is as long as I pretty much stay in the slow lane and only pass when necessary and return to the slow lane, I shouldn't have a problem.
Now that I've said that I'm sure I will get nailed on my upcoming trip to CA in a couple of weeks.

Dave, it's pretty easy to avoid those tickets for us: we don't go to California. Enjoy!

Majority of signs in CA,( that I remember anyway) along I-5 say " All Vehicles Towing " speed limit 55.
As Mr_D , says it's a good place to pick up a very expensive ticket , many I've heard of are $750 +.

Has to be the most archaic speed limit in the US.
Nobody obeys it. I usually do 62-65 mph towing our CRV.
