cargo door latch faiure ideas?

Our 2013 Anthem has the latches on the basement doors that use a short length of wire cable....that invariably pulls out of the screw fitting. Of course, the cable just pulled out on the rearward passenger side door.

That is the compartment that is partially closed off with only a shelf at the top available. Unfortunately there is no apparent way to get to the latch from an adjacent compartment (like the wet bay situation)

Any ideas on how to break into that compartment? I have tried working the awning hook rod under the weather stripping from the forward edge of the compartment with the adjacent door open but after two hours of trying I haven't snagged the latch lever "correctly."

While the wall is solid to the front of that compartment, all of the panels will either pull out or screw out on the compartment in question; hopefully you can then gain access to the locking "wire". Haven't had that door problem, but had all those carpet covered panels out.
