"Blowing the grease seals..." I am old but this is a new concept for me. Need to excrete some old grease from all four universal joint seals to ensure they have new grease. If a seal doesnt excrete grease, it may be dry. If applicable, need to grease the lateral drive shaft joint too--at least 7-10 pumps will be needed.

Freightliner instruction is to get new grease to come out of each joint in the universal joint. Problem is when the grease finds an easy route out through one bearing seal, it's hard to get grease to come out the other three. I like to put grease in both zerks on the universal joint. Just did mine and 5 shots of grease in each zerk provided some grease squeezing out past the seal. Now the interior cavity in the universal joint is full of grease. Then your finger to wipe the excess grease out of the universal joint, or it will sling off all over the bottom of the coach.

My next thought is why did it takes 10 shots of grease to fill the cavity inside the universal joint. My theory is that the centrifugal force gradually forces the grease in that cavity out past the seals as you drive over the year and is why the cavity is empty when you grease it again. That grease is gradually slung out all over the bottom of the coach.

Now for the spline, Freightliner says to grease until grease comes out the little hole, put your finger over the hole and continue to grease until grease comes out the spline. Now that cavity at the end of the spline is full of grease and it took 20 shots of grease to get grease to come out the hole. My theory here is the centrifugal force will also squeeze the cavity grease out past the splines while you drive and the cavity will be empty next year when you service, and that grease will be slung around under the coach.

Thinking ahead for next year I had a brilliant idea. I wrapped a rag around the spline joint and drive shaft end to catch the grease as it comes out, secured the rag with zip ties. I have about 5 hours driving now and the rag looks just like it did when I put it on.

Anyone want to predict what the results will be when it's time to grease next year?

If this works, a cover for the universal joints is next because you can definitely see the grease around under the coach from them.

You need a large enough drain system to hold about 8 - 10 gallons and then pump it into the emptied bottles from the new oil. the danger of a spill is no worse than a spill of one of the new bottles, assuming you have properly capped the bottles with the orrginal caps.
Used, waste motor oil is not treated the same as new stuff in the event of a spill.
