Certainly, if your battery isolator is solenoid- based, it could be bad.
Even if batteries are weak, if alternator is putting out 14 VDC, house bank should not "discharge down to 12V". Sure, if a dead cell, that 14 VDC would boil the batteries (charging a 10 VDC battery as if it were a 12 VDC battery), but it WOULD charge them.
