Stone Mountain is a common place to stay for those traveling to NIRVC.

Yes, I have stayed there. It's a nice place, plenty of hiking trails. Nice clean sites too

I like to save RV parks in my Google Maps that will accommodate the size of my rig. I looked up Stone Mountain and there are two. Stone Mountain Heights RV Park and Stone Mountain and Stone Mountain Park Campground. Can you guys clarify which one (or both) you are recommending?

We stayed at Stone Mountain Park Campground a couple of years ago. Very nice and clean. Close to all the areas of the park, great for kids. You can even fish in the lake.

We have stayed many times at Stone Mountain Park Campground. About your only good choice close in to the city. It is safe and well patrolled, never felt there were any issues, several restaurants and grocery stores just outside of the east gate.
If you need to be further east/north, Ft. Yargo State Park at Winder, Ga., is really nice and doable, but does not have full hookups, but a pretty accessible dump station. Further North/East there is a park at Commerce coming online that is being converted to an updated KOA.
That's about it, staying within a reasonable radius of Atlanta.....there is one or two up I-75N, but I usually don't need to stay on the North side of the city.
Close in to town, I'd do Sone Mountain Park every time.

Lake Lanier Island has opened their new campsites. First section was open Dec ‘19 when we were last there. They were in process of building another area at that time. Super nice compared to their old camping areas.
Lanier Island has under gone some major changes over the last few years , so consider that when reading any ‘old’ reviews. The location is also on the north side as is NIRVC.

Stone Mountain Park Campground, it is inside the park area. Wouldn’t recommend staying anywhere else in that area.

Are you referring to Margaritaville RV Resort on Lake Lanier Island? It looks like there is a campground under construction on Google Maps Satellite at 34.175082164713835, -84.04479558104875. It is not labeled and does not look like it is part of Margaritaville RV Resort.

The rv Park wasn’t named at the time we were there. When viewing on google maps. The new opened rv lots are on the right close to the end of the most western island. My view from google maps shows the construction in progress on the opposite(south) side of the road from the new open rv lots.
The current construction is where the old rv lots were. It had become very run down. Last time we camped there in 2010, on weekend it was over run by riff raff who would rent a spot for the weekend and have all their friends(30-40) come over for an afternoon party. Management didn’t care. That was around the time frame of the new owners taking over.

OK. Thanks for the information. I am going to bookmark the coordinates since it is not named yet. I take it you did not book a reservation and just showed up? (since there is no contact information).

Unfortunately, there are not a lot of choices of RV parks in the Atlanta area... Like some previous posters have mentioned, Margaritaville RV Resort at Lanier Islands is going to be your best bet. The only issue is that its about a 30 to 40 minute drive to downtown Atlanta (when traffic is cooperating). We stayed there back in October in our Discovery, and loved it. All the sites are paved, with the full menu of services and amenities. Many of the sites are situated so that you have nice views of the lake.
There is also Stone Mountain... We camped there several years ago in a 5th wheel, and depending on what area or loop you reserve, it could be very hard to level. Some of the roads and sites were in poor condition and the road pavement was really broken up. I have done some reading that they are finally trying to spruce up the place and make repairs. I would give it another try if I could get a site in the loop directly behind the office. At the time we camped there, those were the most level and accessible. But again, let me stress that its been several years since we were there...
