Cleaning Aluminum Wheels

Sorry for burning up these forums (lately). That said they are great (you all are great) and I can always count on finding the advice I need. Thank you all for that.

Any recommendations for cleaning the aluminum wheels (rims)? After 41,000 miles and 3 years they don't look new anymore. Recently we had it professionally cleaned and they recommended "Magic Eraser" but I think the wheels still look dull. I suspect Steel Wool (Brillo, etc.) is too abrasive. I know there are chemical cleaners but they may be too harsh.

Thank you for any suggestions or advice on making my aluminum wheels look new again.

I used this:

and this :

I followed up with this to help protect them.

It takes lots of elbow grease! No short cuts. A lot of time on each wheel, ask me how I know this

Uncoated, Aluminum wheels need constant maintenance. Polish a couple times a year and wash, wash, wash them often. Polishing them is not an easy job. I use a wheel with rogue sticks, but it's a PAI. This is why I optioned Alcoa dura bright wheels in my new CS. They do not require polishing. The downside is that they don't shine quite as bright as a properly polished wheel. That said, I don't care, I hate polishing wheels!

Two products that I've used with great results are White Diamond wheel polish and Mother's aluminum polish along with a Mother's power ball.

I use Blue Magic once a year. About every three weeks in between cold water. No chemicals. My motorhome has Alcoa wheels that are coated. As a side event, the Blue Magic works very good at restoring plastic lenses. You can get it at Amazon.Click image for larger version

If you like working with a battery operated drill, I use one of these

https://www.amazon.com/Meguiars-G440...30149862&psc=1

I use the mothers Mag and Aluminum Polish, put it on with the drill attachment, and wipe it off with a soft cloth. There is also a polishing ball for the drill if you want to use the drill for the majority of the work.

Getting between the Lug Nuts, etc is where the work and patience come in to play. Almost wish I could remove the tire to polish the rims, but too much work. I have removed the hub covers and worked on those on a table, usually in a RV park. I try not to do them all at the same time - work on one side one day, and the other the next. (2 days of cocktails!)

Actually not hard to bring back the shine. Busch aluminum wash will remove the oxide just by spraying on and rinsing off. You'll immediately have an unpolished shine. Then I use Blue Magic with a power cone on my drill. The photos are before and after and about 20 minutes work, including removing and reinstalling lug covers Tip, spray on, let sit 2 minutes, rinse off, then spray a second time and immediately rinse off. If you don't do the second spray, there will be streaks on the wheel.Click image for larger version
