Coolant question

Need to top off my coolant and will carry a jug with me while traveling, just in case. I checked with Spartan and they said to use Final Charge Extended Life and to be sure it was pre-diluted. Question: Is this the Peak 50/50 and is it the OAT or NOAT version? Thanks in advance

Below are images from the Peak web site. Their "Final Charge Global" product is the OAT coolant. The "Final Charge NOAT" is, as the label indicates, NOAT coolant.

NAPA stores, at least here in the Phoenix area, are a good source for Final Charge Global. I buy the non-diluted Final Charge Global for less than $20 per gallon and use distilled water to dilute it myself. That way you end up with two gallons for less than $10 per gallon.

Spartan recommends that after 3 years you add Final Charge Extender every 3 years which comes in a 1 quart size. It is good for up to 12 gallon cooling systems. It says it revitalize the protective elements in your HD extended life coolant. It is about 20$ dollars and have only been able to from Spartan. Just added one to our 18 Spartan K-3 605 LA coach.

I found not all auto parts stores(take your pick) carry this fluid.
Buy a few bottles for backup when you do.

Walmart and NAPA have been the best bets for me. Last time I purchased Napa had a lower price than Walmart, that was a switch. If Walmart has a lot of Semis in the lot, they will have Final Charge. If it's a "neighborhood" store the chances are 50/50.

I only carry a gallon, even when my radiator was leaking, I traveled to CA and back to FL and was always able to find Final Charge very easily along the way. Look for Walmarts with truck traffic.

Below is a two-page PDF file with information on the Final Charge Extender product.

The document recommends adding the Extender at 300,000 miles of on-road use/3 Years or 6,000 hours of off-highway use. The way it's written it isn't clear if the Extender is required at 3 years of on-road use.

I'm sure it won't hurt anything if you add it every three years, but given the comparatively low mileage and low hours logged on motorhomes, I tend to doubt anything bad will happen if you don't.

Yup, I can tell you from working with the engineers at Caterpillar Corp on their ELC (basically the same type of coolant) that they changed their recommendation for the additive for RV use, removing the time part of it and leaving the "additive at 300,000 miles". They found that in normal RV use we were "overdosing" by adding the additive at normal RV usage mileage.

Thanks Larry and Brett - very helpful/timely info. I just had a reminder pop up in my calendar "add coolant extender?", and your comments answered my question!

Good info Brett - thanks so much for sharing your knowledge and providing authoritative information!

P.S. - With some luck, I MAY live long enough to log 300,000 miles across all the motorhomes we've owned (now on coach #5 and about 200K miles), but I definitely won't live long enough to reach 300K on only one!

Once the border opens and we are allowed to travel again donít come to Canada without your own supply of Global Final Charge. The only place I have found it in Canada is online.

Follow-up question looking for "Tips." I planned on topping off the coolant and tried for 30 minutes this afternoon (in 100 degree Houston heat) to get the damn coolant cap off. Is there a trick to this?? I'm pushing down as hard as I can and turning counterclockwise. It gets past the first "stop" and gets to the point where the cap appears to be loose, but I can't budge it any farther. Maybe I'm just too weak, old or stupid, but this is crazy. Came home to cool off and regroup and will try again in the morning. All suggestions are welcome -- Thanks in advance!

The first time I took the cap off the 14, I had to stand on a short ladder to get enough leverage to push down hard enough to get it past the second latch. After that it was fine.
