Cracked windshield

I have been parked on an almost level concrete pad under a port near Bryson City, NC for two weeks. Temperatures have been moderate and windshield gets sun a few hours a day. Magneshade has been on and both day and night shades have been down for about 10 days with partially up occasionally. The Anthem has 43K+ miles on it and traveled extensively out west with no significant windshield issues.

We aren't going to be getting any sun today so I raised the shades and discovered a long crack on the passenger side about 18 inches long going up from left to right looking from inside. I don't see any chips or other kind of start point at either end of the crack.

Hard to understand how this happened. Any ideas?

Any suggestions on what to do or not do while awaiting replacement or best way to get replacement before I call Progressive insurance?

TIA

Progressive has a glass division that will handle your claim. The biggest headache is it takes a couple days to replace an RV glass once they actually have the replacement, and will need to be done at a repair facility. They can get you started by phone, and will ask for pictures of the crack. Wasn't a fast process for me, but they did a good job overall.

I had a one-piece windshield replaced in my previous Windsor paid for by Progressive in Florida. The company I chose to do the install was RV Glass Solutions in Lakeland Fl and the glass came from Coach Works which is a partner of RV Glass Solutions.

This past spring, I had Progressive install the one-piece windshield in my current Dynasty at the same place in Lakeland FL.

Both times no out of pocket cost, just a signature. I would strongly recommend RV Glass Solutions and Coach Glass Works as they are the country's best RV glass replacement company. They have many locations around the country to choose from. Give then a call.

This is very unusual. Without chips, a crack like that indicates twisting occurred, but you said you were on a mostly level pad. Were your jacks down?

I had a rock chip that over a couple days stretched from the impact site, all the way up and down my windshield. Is yours growing?

You can drive with it, as I did, and had it replaced in my driveway. The windshield has to setup over a day so like mentioned, its a couple days repair.

Thanks. I live near Lakeland so that sounds great but I am in NC now so don't know if it is a good idea to drive so far.

I have not moved and so far not growing. Jacks are down and they only operate in pairs to prevent twisting so I hope that is not the cause. We shall see what happens when the sun comes back after Helene passes.

If you examine the crack very closely you will probably find a small chip that started it. It's highly unusual for a crack to happen without a chip as a starting point unless the frame has twisted.

X2 on RV Glass Solutions. They came to me at my hanger in Ft Myers. My insurance company scheduled everything.

Jerry, I drove the Windsor with multiple cracks and chips to Alaska and back two times before having it replaced. The windshield on the Dynasty was already damaged when we purchased it in 2022. Drove it from Salt Lake City back to Florida then up to the NE and back to Florida before having it replaced in March of 2023.

I would not worry about it while in NC and have it replaced when you return.

The windshield is safety glass. It will not shatter or fall out with a crack in it. I drove this from the upper peninsula all the way down to Travers City.

My state requires glass comprehensive insurance so windshield replacement is at no cost. However, my insurance company is sensitive to windshield cracking from frame twist and really grilled me about this when they replaced the cracked windshield so I could sell a previous motorhome. They actually said one replacement is OK, but we won't do this again if you are mis-using the leveling jacks. Since then, with a newer motorhome, I have been religious about always extending the individual front jack before the two rears (per coach instructions so the frame pivots on the front jack rather than twisting) . And, guess what, I drove (slowly) on a back road in northern Michigan with really big potholes and the windshield cracked! . The vertical crack is at the outer edge of the right passenger side and not really in the line of site, so what does the "on line advisory council" suggest?

My suggestions is to NOT drive on a back road in northern Michigan with really big potholes!

Dropping into those really big potholes which twists your coach is no different than not leveling correctly.

OP - you can drive with the crack. There are two panes of glass glued together and it's very unlikely both are cracked. And as Chuck pointed out, it's laminated safety glass.

If you look closely at the pic, my crack went from top to bottom and I drove it from New Orleans to Tampa.
