Dash A/C Inop...Leak finally found!

Well...after several weekends of searching to determine where my dash a/c was losing refrigerant, I finally added a FULL 2oz bottle of U/V dye and....found it! Definitely NOT where I wanted it to be. This is the bottom of the Tempcon combo A/C Evaporator/Heater assembly. The yellow stain is the dye. Replacing this is not going to be a fun job!

Well, congratulations on the good diagnosis.

Would pulling the generator make sense?

It seems as if that might give you some working room, and frankly, I can’t think it would take long to yank.

Is that an option?

I would confer with Entegra before attempting this one. They could probably advise on the best way to access it.

The combo ac/heater unit is forward of the genset and mounted on a bulkhead stuffed up behind the front cap. The top three bolts of the dozen or so that attach the unit to that bulkhead are virtually inaccessible. I will definitely remove the sliding panel that hides the generator but the generator will stay put. I need to figure a way to access those top three fasteners.

Could those be behind the dash? Maybe a call to Entegra might have the secret.

I've tried to have our AC fixed now for 3 years and each time, it never holds a charge ... so there is a leak somewhere that no one seems to find. Keep us posted on how your repair goes. This is probably where ours is leaking as well. Thanks

There maybe an access behind the radio. You can view the side of the box by removing the passenger tray in the dash. Please keep us informed on how to gain access. Good luck

👍 I had my eyes inside that tray yesterday and believe that may ultimately be my access to the top 3 fasteners. It will likely require some minor woodworking to open it up and then to seal it back up when finished.

Before I go that route though I am going to snuggle up to the generator and see if I can get my long skinny arm up there and touch the top fasteners. If so, I should be able to get to those top 3 in the blind.

We are headed to New Orleans in a couple days so this repair will have to wait for a couple of weeks but at least I now know where the leak is at...finally!

In the meantime, I need to chase down a vendor for that core plus a new receiver/dryer.

I had a few minutes this evening to think about my plan of attack to remove the evap/heater core so I sat down in front of the generator and confirmed that all of the fasteners to include the fasteners on the top left and top right of the housing are accessible from the generator bay but.....access to any fastener in the middle up top is a total no-go from this location. There is simply no way to reach it from the front.

I went inside and popped the tray on the passenger side dash and it looks like with very little deconstruction I can remove a small wooden panel which should allow me to reach any fasteners on the top of the housing. The wood panel looks to be held in place with only two wood screws and sealed around the edges with expandable foam.

A few images to help other’s visualize what I am seeing are below. The first two are from the inside and the third shot is the backside of that panel.

When I removed my evaporator on my 2014 there weren’t any bolts in the 3 holes on the top of the housing but there was a stepped galvanized retainer that held the top of the housing. All I had to do was remove the rest of the bolts on the other 3 sides and slide the housing down to free it from the retainer on top. I’m not sure if they did the same on the 2012’s but I know from ‘14 to current this is the setup. Best of luck!

I just went out and sent my snake camera in there and darn if you are not correct! I have the very same retainer that you described! Thanks much for that tip!
