Should I be changing the filter annually even tho I only put about 3000 miles a year on it?
Also, what is this removal tool that is mentioned and where do I get it?
thanks,

Ron,
The interval I have seen for changing is 2 years or 200,000 miles. The removal tool comes with the new filter.

I cannot see Spartan, Cummins or anyone else recommending that a DEF filter be left in service until it plugs up and fails. If the filter is plugged or nearly plugged the DEF doser pump will be working that much harder and will most likely fail prematurely. Running a DEF filter until it fails will generate fault codes on the Spartan message center that will quickly derate the engine power and perhaps do damage to the SCR and DPF system. All this to save a few bucks?

Assuming it is inside the DEF tank and wondering how it gets "dirty". I've been VERY careful to wipe the tank neck and cap down before opening and have used only the clean spout on a new jug of WM fluid. How does "dirt" get to the filter?

Ed, it's not in the tank but it's right behind it. If you are always getting clean DEF and no foreign objects or dirt get into the tank it may indeed last quite a while. There's no hard fast rule on how long it takes to make the filter dirty. It all depends on the circumstances. If you are using clean jugs that haven't been on the shelf for too long and are careful to wipe the neck, and so forth you will get more than someone who pumps a lot of DEF from a less-than-immaculate DEF pump at a truck stop.

I can't see them recommending that either. My documents from the Spartan Academy state 200,000 miles or 2 years for the DEF filter.

I thought you were referring to the 1 1/16 socket he purchased at Home Depot.

Here's a great video clip that shows how to perform the DEF filter change.
