DEF Gauge False Readings

My DEF gauge is giving false readings jumping from 4 bars down to low DEF warnings in a matter of minutes and then it jumps back up to 1-4 bars. I have researched the IRV2 forums and You Tube but found nothing related to my system. It appears that I may need to replace the sending unit but I would appreciate advice from anyone who has dealt with this in the past.

Might try unplugging the DEF head to rebootit, also a 12v reboot for the dash at the same time it to see if that will correct it. Thankfully it is a 14 that does not have the problem DEF sensors, but the DEF heads on the Classics still failed.

Had that dash gauge drop to low def warning a few years ago despite the tank being 3/4 full. May have been heat related after a long climb. I unplugged the connector on top of the def tank for 30 seconds and that reset the system. Have not had a problem since.

Do not have gauge but on recent 14 day trip the countdown started. We discovered after the trip at Mercedes dealer the def tank monitor reported near empty even though it was full.

Replaced as warranty item through recent settlement and replaced for not charge.

2015 3500 with 90,000 miles.

Good luck.

After my first DEF head replacement, the "new" one behaved just as you describe. Although I had no codes, another new head was the solution. Spartan would not ship one without codes until I took it to Cummins and they verified that it was not the DEF quantity sender/gauge that was acting up.

My thought was to reboot the system (as suggested in prior post) so I will go with that tomorrow and hope it does the trick. I have not had any problems with it for seven years but I think the loose battery cable might have affected it. Thanks for the responses.

Should I have the motor running when I reboot or just the ignition on?

Nothing on, you do not want to risk shorting anything out. Think of the MH as a computer, improper shut downs can damage the hard drive.

Then you are saying that the DEF tank has constant power going to it and just switching off the chassis battery cutoff switch won't reboot? I know the starter has constant power and only removing the chassis battery cables will remove the power to it but I was not aware that the DEF had constant power.

Just my way of rebooting problem items, going directly to the source if at all possible. It is also Spartans way of rebooting the DEF sensors. When I had my first DEF head failure and spoke with Spartan they said to unplug the DEF head. I passed on what the manufacture told me.

I will test it with the switch off and let you know the results. I am going down there today and hope to get it fixed along with some other issues. Thanks for the replies.

I would think unplugging the DEF head with the ignition key off would accomplish absolutely nothing.

Might want to mention that to Spartan, they don't know much about the DEF heads either. However it did work for 757driver as posted above and others that have posted it over the years, hard to argue with success. Will it work 100% of the time, absolutely not, is it worth 30 seconds to try?, that will be up to the coach owner.
