2. The solutions you described would be able to be applied to provide temporary relief to other users of heavy duty vehicles like the OTR freight industry if the parts shortage begins to seriously impact national commerce or other economic activity. And it could be implemented very quickly with existing infrastructure.
3. Large RV's average mileage and consequent contributions to exhaust pollution is virtually unmeasurable when taken in context of total annual heavy duty diesel truck totals.
These are points I intend to cover in my outreach but you can of course include them or not.
Thanks for your efforts.

Excellent points Keith. I had thought about mentioning the chip shortage, but failed to consider how long it could potentially last.
And of course you’re right that it would probably take a hundred years of RV travel to equal a day’s worth of over-the-road truck emissions.
I'll work on incorporating your recommendations and post another draft. Thanks very much for your input.

Tiffin offered a Spartan chassis as an option on various product lines some years ago, and Spartan was the only chassis on which they built the Zephyr for quite some time. But the Zephyr is now on a Tiffin PowerGlide chassis and a Spartan chassis hasn't been available on any other Tiffin product lines for quite some time. In other words, Tiffin Class A diesel motorhomes are currently built on one of two chassis brands - Freightliner or their in-house PowerGlide.
Could that change? Sure, but I'd be surprised if it does. Thor Industries doesn't tend to mandate those sorts of decisions and a person I consider to be a credible source recently indicated the PowerGlide chassis is not going away.
Time will tell...

That might work in some states, but here in Arizona diesel motorhomes are subject to annual emissions testing. The only good news is that the requirement doesn't kick in until the coach is five years old, but it won't surprise me to see that interval reduced at some point in the future.
My semi-serious theory is that the RV dealers lobbied for the testing requirement, figuring it would incentivize motorhomes owners to trade their coaches for new ones to avoid the hassle of taking a big motorhome through testing facilities designed for cars and light trucks.

I think that your summary is a good one and presents the issues well.
What forum are you intending your summary?

Gary, I haven't made that determination just yet. I was motivated by the realization that sitting on our thumbs waiting for Spartan and/or Shaw Development to solve the problem doesn’t appear to be a winning strategy, as least not in the near term.
So I set out to create a single document defining the problem and putting forth two or three temporary solutions that would allow affected owners to confidently use their motorhomes between now and whenever Shaw Development gets their act together or Spartan is able to secure an alternative supplier.
I plan to update the document tomorrow morning (Tuesday 6/22), incorporating the recommendations made by Archer2. After that, I guess I’ll have to figure out what to do with it.

Larry, thanks for the excellent summary.
I think more emphasis needs to be put on the de-rate time and distance being an unknown. Saying eventually makes it seem like a long time while we know of some who had very little time.
The safety aspect needs to have greater emphasis. A big RV on a 2 lane road with no shoulder that is broke down is a major hazard to both the RV and vehicles around them.

Good points Jerry. I'll be happy to incorporate your suggestions in the next version (tomorrow morning with fresh brain rather tonight with, well, you know...)

I just thought of something. Pete Buttigieg is the new Secretary of Transportation. He was born and raised in South Bend, Indiana which is half an hour west of the Elkhart area, Ground Zero for most of the U.S. RV industry. Surely someone from Entegra or Jayco or Thor has a relationship with him and could maybe enlist his help in arguing our case or at least in getting the attention of the EPA? Just a thought.

Larry,
Thank you so much for your the time and effort you have put into the summary. After reading what efforts are taking place by others, I will try my Senator as well. I live 20 miles from Shaw Development, which puts Shaw Development in the same district as my Senator, Rick Scott. I will send your summary and the link of the post with the number of people that have filed complaints with the NHTSA to Rick Scott today. Just maybe with enough people contacting their representatives pressure can be put on the EPA or NHTSA to take action on this matter effecting so many vehicle owners.

Getting the Government to step in B/C "one" company builds and "repeatedly" sells an inferior product sure does seem like a stretch to me. If FL and Ford, Ram, Gm, and others can get this right why should Spartan get a pass on substandard products ?

Getting a temporary workaround to potentially save lives is not getting a pass.

The government could also provide a remedy by forcing vendors to supply warranty repairs before selling new units.
That wouldn’t be a pass, it would motivate Spartan / Shaw to expedite resolution.
These thinks are relatively small and light in the grand scheme of shipping. They could also pay to airship from overseas instead of waiting on a ship if that is really the bottleneck.
The government has more than one option to target a solution to the manufacturers at the root of the issue without compromising safety or environmental regulations.

Please keep in mind that for some this issue is an inconvenience. I’m pretty sure that for most of you your MH is for recreation and if it doesn’t work, oh well, just leave it at the dealer until it’s fixed. That’s fine but for some of us the MH is our home. If it doesn’t work and can’t be fixed then we are going to need to find somewhere to live and be prepared to stay there for an unknown period of time.
The EPA in fact caused what should have been a routine maintenance issue to morph into a serious problem. Remember that the EPA decided to, maliciously in my opinion, mandate “inducements” (their word) to enforce compliance by requiring the disabling of an otherwise perfectly fine vehicle when a component fails and starts generating false errors. Remember that even when the DEF header fails as far as anyone can tell the actual system continues to work as designed.
So here we are. The problem is what it is. Complaining about whether Shaw should have a better design or a more robust supply chain or Spartan should take responsibility or whatever is fine and valid but that doesn’t help if you are stuck parked on an I-10 exit ramp in Nowhere, West Texas.
There’s an old saying about alligators and swamps that comes to mind.

[Mod Edit]
I drove a F350 for several years with the delete and didn't have any problems at all. But it does contribute to the diesel exhaust smell and my wife doesn't want me to delete my Entegra because of this. Otherwise I would do it in a heartbeat.
