If I were you, I would demand Spartan work the payment issues with Cummins, which they can do. I have ZERO confidence in reimbursement. Too many bad experiences...if you are under warrantee, let them work payment issues.

Cummins will still have to call Spartan and order necessary head / parts. Cummins is charging me $162.50 hour for this service call. I would think that Spartan will reimburse me as this is a warranty issue.

I didn't want to drive my coach into Cummins Albany as I have already driven 219 miles since I received the codes and didn't want to temp fate and based on comments on this and other forums, I decided to remain in place.

Anyway, I am hoping to have some news today.

More to follow...

Just an outsider's question.

Is there any consistency in the head failures? I mean, with so many failures being reported and "fixed" under warranty, is there one component of the head that is causing the problems or is the head so complex that it's just being replaced without diagnosing the particular issue?

I know the answer may not be known to you owners who have the problem, but maybe some of you have talked to the techs to find out just what is failing all the time.

Sure sounds like this is going to go the way the Spartan radiator fiasco went. Keep throwing junk DEF heads into a coach until the owner is out of warranty then wash your hands of the whole situation.

Today I was talking to a crane operator that was working at our office. He said he thought it was a 2019 model, just out of warranty, and said he had to have the DEF head replaced when it was 6 months old.

Had a conversation with an International dealer today and he told me the EPA had a new requirement for the DEF systems in or around 2016 that required the systems to check DEF quality.
It seems like most of the post with issues with the DEF head are later model coaches, so there have been some requirements and changes made in the DEF head.
Have no ideal how these changes would effected how it checks the level of the DEF.

He went on to say when the quality requirement went into effect it gave them fits.
Sorry not much help here, just some info.

Richard

Spartan is consistent with the radiators, DEF heads and the exhaust crossover bellows. They know they will fail but hide behind the warranty time-out. I have little to no respect for their lack of customer service or concern.

Well, started out on my first post pandemic outing today. Having watched this thread, I was, shall we say, uneasy. Made it 80 miles.......DEF head got me. But, at least I made it back home before de-rating. Now get to wait two or three weeks (maybe) till new ones come in. I need a new hobby.

After going though the radiator on 14 on the first cross country trip, and now the DEF sensor on the 19 with only 1,953 miles, I have lost ALL respect for Spartan. Hopefully they will get slapped in the face like Norcold refrigerators did. It only took 13 year, but I just received my final settlement check. Hopefully putting out their trip ruining junk will come home to bite then on the a$$.

I entertained the idea of moving up to a 2021 Anthem. I too have lost confidence in Spartan and not willing to deal with a potential DEF sensor or head problem after only one possible trip. How many coaches are currently sitting on dealer lots with the defective DEF issue....could be all of them? Spartan should recall all the heads and work with the dealers to have them replaced.

In the midst of a "pandemic" the last thing you need, is to shoot yourself in the foot with questionable ethics to decrease your orders/sales. I'm lucky that I have not experienced the radiator issue, but disappointed with Spartan for not stepping up to the plate to make it right with those that are out of warranty.

JMO

Will wait this one out.
Cheers!

Is this a Spartan issue, a Cummins issue or an issue of all DEF engines? Seems like there are vehicles other than Spartan having issues as well.
