Marc, on our 2020 I’ve had no battery problems, no vega touch problems. I did have a DEF failure two years ago, but no problems with the Gen 7 since then. 🤞🤞🤞🙏🙏🙏

Ahhh, that makes sense. Overall though a good reminder that the DSS simulator is not for the Classic’s.

Don
A question has come up with a friend. I said that the DSS was appropriate for a 2015 Anthem and someone else told my friend it was not.
Remind me. OK for a 2015 Anthem ?

Gary,
The quality monitoring of DEF was not mandated until the 2016 model year.
Later...

In talking with Rob (voltdoc) and others it was not designed for the earlier coaches without quality sampling so it is very questionable how it would handle the extra input that the DSS would provide. As far as I know no one has ever tried it on an earlier coach.

According to the website ( https://defsim.myervin.com/cummins-engine-compatibility), which contains this statement:
The Simulator has only been tested and shown to work on a handful of Cummins engines using Cummins CM2350 ECMs. Before you begin building your own Simulator we recommend that you ascertain what model ECM you have. As a general guideline the Simulator should work on all Cummins engines designated as EPA 13 and/or EPA 17. We believe that includes all engines produced since 2016. (Note: edited to change “2013” to “2016”.)
That suggests to me that it will not work on a '15 model year coach.
Take care,
Stu

The pre-2016 coaches had a simpler system that was nowhere near as prone to failure. Hence they didn’t need a simulator.

The critical thing that determines whether the DSS will work is whether the vehicle uses a CANBUS/J1939 digital network to communicate between the Sensor and the vehicle ECM. As far as I have seen all of the sensors that have been used on the engines built since 2016 are compatible. One clue is to look to see whether the sensor has 4 wires (not 2, 3 or 5) going to the ECM. If it has 4 wires it MAY be digital but if it has any more or less it is UNLIKELY to be compatible.
At least in theory even if you have a digital CANBUS/J1939 system that is designed to only look for a level and temp sensor (pre-2016 EPA requirement) the DSS should still work. Even though the DSS is sending data simulating a “Urea Quality Sensor” value that the ECM is not expecting, the J1939 standards require the ECM to just ignore any data from a source that it does not recognize and should not trigger any sort of error. Again that is in theory. I don’t know of anybody who has tried a DSS in such a situation. I honestly don’t even know whether such a situation exists.
There are also a couple of different connector types depending on the chassis and/or sensor manufacture but those are fairly trivial to figure out.
The J1939 is an SAE standard that defines the data format that is expected from all devices on the CANBUS and so every DEF sensor should look the same to the ECM no matter who made the sensor.

DEF head
Our DEF head failed on our new 2022 Cornerstone in less than 1000 miles. Spartan and coach net got us a replacement head installed. So far it's working. Our first failed DEF head experience in three DP rigs.

After following a story about the Canadian Entegra owner who had a fire station diesel mechanic build him a DSS and used it to return home with after a def failure, I ordered one for my classic. He explained that the connector was different as well as the function for Cummins built before 2016. Carrying it as insurance so far. Just read the preceding on my tablet and would have to research the DSS builder.

FYI - it's not all 2016's either. I made a simulator and when I went to test it, turns out I don't have the same connector. Apparently there was a cross over mid model year. You really need to go check the connector to be sure.

My elderly good friend has Motorhome with a 2022 Cummings how do you build a Def simulator? He ask me to help him do it , I told him it would be easier if I did myself. I am very mechanical and can rebuild most any gas engine,,any help will be greatly appreciated…….
