I was told by a couple of techs that my filter was in the tank too, but itís not - mine is external, built into pump housing, which is quite common for FL systems. Iím not sure if it can dry out or not, but Iíll pull the filter and see what happens. If DEF runs freely then it should remain flooded; if it doesnít then I could see the filter drying out. Depends on valving.

Two things YOU can do to quickly destroy def heads. 1)Over fill the def tank 2) Ignore the warning beeps and sensor tests and start the coach up prior to all of the sensors/systems being properly energized. The vo;tage flsh when you start up is not too kind.

Gary, there is a Freightliner shop in Flagstaff. Our ECM failed at Camp Verde but made it up to them for repairs. Found them capable.

We have a 2018 FL chassis and the Def Pump head was replaced about 15 months ago, but I have not seen anything on replacing the DEF filter except on this post - where might this little bugger be on our 6.7?

It's at the bottom of the tankon our Anthem. There was a post a couple months ago
https://www.irv2.com/forums/f278/def-filter-512882.html

if I copied it correctly, that goes into more detail.

Definitely timed out and should be changed. I did a write up elsewhere that I don’t feel like repeating, but bottom line for a motorhome: change the filter annually, and ignore EVERYTHING else you read on it. It’s cheap, easy to change, and good insurance. Truckers can rely on the 200k maintenance interval because they drive a lot, and often. MH drivers can’t. This should be on the literature but it isn’t.

The DEF Header and DEF pump are two entirely different assemblies and in different places. On your FL chassis, the pump should be on the back of the tank, and the filter is behind a round cap on the pump housing. Quick easy swap. When you do it, let it prime (key on, not running), then let it sit over night and prime it again. Should be good to go after that.

I haven’t seen how Spartan does it but it definitely sounds different from Freightliner. On FL the pump is mounted externally and the filter is in the pump housing.

You really can’t tell by looking at it externally. If it’s never been changed you can get an idea by the year of the coach. But if your system is working properly it doesn’t matter. Even though there are a lot of failures, there are a lot more that are working as designed. So if it isn’t broken, no need to fix it. They either work or they don’t. And if it does fail, any decent shop will put in the latest version, and that you can check by the part number on the new header.
