DEF Pump Question

Has anyone bought a new gas container and gone to the the DEF pump at say a FlyingJ
and filled it the container?
Looks like def at the pump is a lot cheaper. I don't fill at the pump because some fuel stations don't have the fill on that side plus I don't think the door would open far enough without hitting the pump to fill the def. I don't have the small door to fill the def.

Yes but be careful, DEF is corrosive to a lot of metals. When we had our PS only DEF tank in our previous Allegro Bus, I bought a few of the Walmart DEF packages, and saved those plastic containers for exactly what you're thinking about. The only thing I would add is that since DEF has a shelf life, I didn't start looking to fill my Walmart containers until I was close to needing DEF, especially since the usage ratio is so low.

Before Walmart started selling DEF for $7.88 for 2.5 gallons I use to refill my 2.5 gallon contains at the truck stops. Now it is easier to refill the DEF while the DW is putting the groceries away while in the Walmart parking lot.

Ditto what Chuck said. To refill cans at the pump is a hassle to save what, a dollar? Buying the Walmart DEF and refilling at your leisure is much easier.

Also keep in mind that you might need a magnetic 'collar' to pump DEF from the pump into a container. My understanding is that coaches have the magnetic collar built in.

When we first took delivery of the new coach, it was my first time having DEF. The DEF handle is very sensitive and if you don't hold your tongue just right, it clicks off!

That's when I found out the clerk has a loaner magnetic collar for filling jugs that don't have them built-in. I thought we needed one because of the difficulty and it didn't make any difference in using it.

Our diesel filler and DEF filler are behind the same door on the driver's side.

Safe travels,
Mark

Sorry, I don't understand the need to store def from a pump into a container ?!?

DEF tanks in my previous vehicle lasted for months, and since I passed Flying J's every so often, I would just fill from the pump... (and that was when DEF was just coming out ! it is available all over the place now)

Current 2011 doesn't require def

Flying J is not the place to purchase DEF in containers. Walmarts brand is now in all Walmart stores at $7.88 for 2.5 gallons. I carry a spare in the MH so I am never in an emergency situation and have to pay $19.28. I use the spare jug at the end of our travel season and purchase a fresh spare each year.

Have you tried a truck stop for the DEF fluid lately? The hose is long enough to reach around my Chevy truck to the fill tube under the hood on the pass side. For my 2 DEF fills so far, I just wait for the DEF low light and then hit the next truck stop. The DEF is very corrosive being mostly Nitrogen, so I use a water hose and hose down the engine DEF fill area after it has cooled.
