Dish at Home, DirectTV In Motor Home?

Recall reading a post (by Gary Jones I think, not sure) where it was mentioned that they had Dish in the home and DirectTV in the motor home. When traveling the Dish account was suspended and DirectTV was activated, reverse when back home.

Sounded like an idea set up for us, we currently have Dish in the home (Hopper + 2 Joeys), have the Winegard Traveler in the MH. This setup sounded desireable because it would prevent the need to install/re-install receivers when leaving or when getting back home. Not a lot of room where the main receiver goes in my MH.

Called Direct yesterday and found out that if we suspend it must be suspended for a minimum of 30 days and also could only do this 2 times per year? The 30 days minumum would not be a problem, however, 2 times a year would be. We most likely will be making 6-8 trips per year.

Now looking at other options for a satellite dish.

Is DirectTV real strict on the 2 times suspending account rule? For those that have both Dish and Direct what has been your experience? How much are charges to suspend Dish/Direct?

How difficult is it to take the receiver out of the home and put in the MH (either Dish Hopper/Joeys or Direct HR24/Genie) when traveling and putting it back when home? Can see advantages to this because we have a lot recorded on the Hopper. Or do you have equipment (receivers) for both the home and MH?

If we decide to take the receiver out of our home when traveling may switch over to DirectTV and close out Dish account. If we keep Dish and want to use it in the MH would have to convert the Traveler to Dish. Has anyone done this and how expensive is it to convert or how difficult is it to convert if you have done it yourself? (saw kits RP-SK-11, RP-SK-12, cost was not that much, less than $100 for both).

Don't really understand why to make this so complex.

Why not just acquire a Dish solo receiver for the RV (211k, 211z or the new 211k - "Wally). And add the new receiver to your existing Dish account for only $7 a month...much less expensive than a separate account. And, any Dish receiver that is not on a package contract, can be suspended as many times a year and for as long as you want.

If you have the Entegra standard Winegard antenna, it is switchable (inside the dome) between DirecTV and Dish. If you upgraded to the optional Trav'ler set for DirecTV, the mod costs about $300 for the new LNB head.

Best luck

I have DirecTV at home with 2 receivers...(one of which I leave in the house and the 2nd receiver I leave in my coach).
DirecTV owns both receivers.
The use of one receiver is included with my DTV program subscription and I pay $5 a month additional for the use of the 2nd receiver.

We have had Direct at home for years, so we took a couple of receivers with us so NIRVC could set up everything for us at delivery. We also opted for the Traveler antenna. The installer took one look at our "antique" receivers and said they won't work or fit in the cabinets. So he installed the Genie units in the coach. This system is fantastic and we leave it in the coach and use our antiques at home. We pay the monthly charge for 5 receivers and don't look back. We do call direct to get the local networks when we get too far from home. It is very user friendly this way.

My ears started to burn a few minutes ago so decided to look at iRV2

Well, I can't help in the most important way because the way my wife and I travel is generally to travel for 3 months at a clip (winter and summer) and be home for three months a time..... So, we turn the DirecTV off generally two times per year. I was told that I may only be able to do this twice a year. I have not tested that by trying to do it three or four times. I have had a month where I was going to travel only a few times and plugged in at the house most of the month, so I just paid for the whole month so I had the DirecTV turned on all the time. However, my travel style is not to use things a few days at a time.

My coach is the 44B of 2015 vintage (doesn't seem like it is "old"). All the electronics install in a small compartment above the "fireplace". Things are tight. I guess that I could put stuff in and out of there, and even though I have worked with electronics my entire adult life, I tremble at the thought of moving that stuff in and out of the coach.... for a hundred dollars a month, I guess I could find a way, but I just don't want to be bothered doing it. AND...... the national DNS network service available through Direct is a big plus. People will say that Dish has no problem with this (moving locals channels a bunch), but it became a serious problem with Direct and it was also a problem in my previous coach which was set up for DISH. I had 20 of the most frustrating telephone calls to Dish CS moving local stations from city to city..... just terrible. Blood pressure would be sky high by the end of the call. I will eventually test the limits of this ruling (30 days x 2 times/year), ... I say this because I am officially a mobile account with DirecTV, not a house account. I will call the DNS specialist who deals with mobile accounts and put that question to them because I have found that most of the people that you talk to when you call Direct or Dish CS is that they KNOW you are a house account and you get answers designed for house accounts. Most don't even know there is such a thing as a mobile account. If I find out anything, I will post it here. I will look into what would be involved in moving and reconnecting my equipment in the coach. I do like lots of stuff about Direct, but I have been a Dish customer since the beginning of Sat TV.

Not that you need more information to confuse this issue, but here it is anyway.

We are loyal DirecTV customers, that isn't going to change. Previously, this was no big deal as we have a HR-24 and another H-24 we use in our MH. In our last coach, we used a Winegard Roadtrip Mission SDI, which is the older version of the T4. It can be used with either DirecTV or Dish, depending upon the positioning of DIP switches within the unit.

Worked great for 5 years in motion, or not.

Fast forward to the Aspire, equipped with the factory option of a Trav'ler (which I've always wanted). Momma said get me In-Motion, so I started working that problem. Let's just say I went as far as installation and functionality before I deciphered DirecTV is letting their SD bird die, and is discontinuing the SD programming in July of 2019.

While not exactly tomorrow, close enough to make me rethink the wisdom of any system looking only at the DirecTV SD satellite.

In short, we no longer own a SD only satellite dish.

If you absolutely must get In-Motion, I would vote for Dish. Ironically, Dish in-Motion will receive HD and SD.

Winegard is currently mute when asked about this subject. Their SD only antennas are not capable of looking at the DirecTV HD birds.

If you're ordering a new coach, I would not pay a penny for any In-Motion system, if like us you're a diehard DirecTV customer.

Sorry about making those ears burn, I thought you were the one that posted that you had Dish at home and Direct in the MH.

We are the same on two issues, Our 2017 44B also has the electronics in the same small compartment above the fireplace (and it is difficult to get behind the TV) and dread moving the box in and out of the home into the MH everytime we travel. IMO a 2015 is an almost new coach, not a vintage?

Our travel will be different so it does not sound like your solution (Dish in home/Direct in MH) will work for us if limited to two switches per year.

In motion is not important to us. If either of us feel the need to watch TV on the road a DVD or a Receiver with DVR will allow us to watch recorded shows or movies. Also although we have had Dish for years we would not let that prevent us from switching over to Direct if that is the most logical solution.

What is important is HD (the 50" front TV is UHDTV) and a receiver with a DVR. Will not watch TV without the ability to pause and fast forward those commercials. Also use the record feature and watch later frequently.

Another thing I am concerned about is converting the Traveler to Dish. Had so many problems with the Winegard Pop up Dish on the Winnebago that I'm reluctant to convert it from Direct to Dish. That Dish never did work well, finally after 3 in warranty repairs and a few repair attempts myself just went to using a Dish on a tripod. I've heard the Traveler is much more reliable, however, converting it to something that it was not designed to do is a concern, do not want to have problems with this one.

Right now I'm leaning towards cancelling Dish at home and having Direct TV installled at home and in the MH. Need to have equipment to use three TV's at home and two in the MH. Do not anticipate using the TV above the dash and if we use the outside TV will take out the receiver from the bedroom if necessary.

Regarding the number of receivers to use, we choose to use 2. We have a DVR and a non DVR receiver. There are a number of variations on the theme.

We actually have the DVR up front, and the non-DVR receiver in the Master BR.

As wired, the DVR can be viewed anywhere within the coach, and outside. Watching the DVR on the MBR TV is as simple as swapping TV Inputs within the TV menu. No biggie.

The receiver in the MBR can only be viewed on that TV. However, this setup permits different viewing habits at opposite ends of the coach. Or, you can change inputs and watch recorded programming from the DVR.

One advantage to the Trav'ler is the ability to set the coach up as you would a residence. This means a Genie and client boxes, so the options open up greatly. We haven't yet pursued this configuration.

The traveler is designed and works very well with both Dish and Direct TV, you just have to change some hardware, about $300 to go from Direct to Dish. NIRVC converted mine that Cale from the factory as Direct to Dish and it works great. Not a problem like they were several years ago. All JMHO

Have a setup similar to yours. DISH with one Hopper and one Joey and a Travler on our '13 RBQ. But, we are full time so don't have the swap requirement.

Never had any problems with the Winegard or other equipment. In fact the Hopper/Joey gave us great flexibility setting up that system. On the 13 RBQ the main TV electronics cabinet is only about 8" deep, no way the Hopper would fit, but the Joey did. The Hopper went in the bedroom. The client/server nature of the Hopper/Joey makes this layout a non issue. Solo node was installed on the roof in our case eliminating any need for new coax runs. The new Entegra units have even more flexibility with the coax runs.

We are updating to a 2017 Entegra 44B this week.I have already bought the DISH reflector and LNB, about $300. Looks to be a simple swap. Let you know if i have any problems. I'll keep the Direct parts for possible future use.

The Hopper will have plenty of room in the 44B above the fire place I think. With this layout we may even return the Joey as we almost never watch separate programs.

Main reason we stayed with DISH was the mega hours of content on the DVR that cannot be moved to Direct. Like you we will not willingly be without the DVR. One operational warning - unplug the Hopper before traveling to avoid damaging the hard drive which could happen on bumpy roads.

Unlike others I very rarely have any problems with DISH getting my local service address changed. I use chat, have a refined request dialog and it is a simple thing for me, be happy to share those details with you. Just did it 3 times in 4 days on our way to Atlanta. Studying the spot beam maps can also help you minimize the number of times you need to change.

Only caution I would offer at this time is to avoid the Hopper 3 upgrade for now. That requires an entirely new LNB and network layout and I'm waiting to get all the conversion details straight before I take the plunge.

Thanks for the input/advice voltdoc and congrats on your new coach.

Please do let me know how the conversion goes on the Trav'ler to Dish, does sound easy to do.

One issue I had with the old Winegard was it was a single LNB, when it found the satellite (sometimes it did not) it had to switch when changing channels to another satellite. Sometimes it could find the other one, then could not find the one it moved from (no trees, that was not the problem). The dual LNB should just about eliminate this issue.

Looked at the hopper we have and it looks sorta large to fit, with some moving around perhaps there would be more room. Would have to get room to reach in and unplug because the 110V plug is all the way in the back on LH hand side.

Locals are not an issue with us, we rarely watch them, can use the antenna if we desire to do so.

The DISH Trav'ler has a triple LNB for the western arc. It can receive 110, 119 and 129 simultaneously. It can also receive eastern arc 61.5 and 72 but only one at a time. Tree cover and other obstructions of course will disrupt the signals but in general I have been impressed with this units ability to provide good signal lock in less than ideal conditions. With clear sky the search procedure usually takes less than five minutes, in marginal conditions it will take a lot longer as it will make at least two full search passes before giving up. Even if all three WA sats can't be found it will still lock onto whatever is visible. The display will show an asterisk next to each sat that was successfully found (110* 119* 129*), if no asterisk that sat is not visible and you should run a check switch on the receiver.

The unit will not automatically look for 61.5 and 72, you will need to manually invoke that from the controller front panel, not hard once you know the keypress sequence to enter the menu mode.

The only issue we've had is that 129 is problematic in the northeast where we spend a lot of time, it's very low on the horizon and not reliably receivable from about New Jersey and north. 129 has almost all the HD programming in most markets. So we often use 61.5 instead which generally will give all the locals in HD, but everything else in SD. 72 will give everything else in HD and usually no locals at all. A strange but useful anomaly is from about RI up to Maine, tuning 61.5 and then doing a Check Switch will ALSO bring in 72 even though the LNB is designed for western arc. The signal strength on 72 will be low but good enough to give us full spectrum programming except in bad weather.

I added a power switch that was reachable from the front of the cabinet, it controlled a power strip that the Hopper and auxiliary drive are plugged into.

If you don't usually watch the major networks that makes it easy, frequent service address changes won't be required.

I will let you know as soon as I make the LNB and reflector swap, I think my biggest headache will be getting up on the roof, the new rig doesn't have a built in ladder!

You have never looked at your monthly bill from DirecTV for several years. Extra receivers went from $5 on Jan. 2011 to $6 and March 2015 to $6.50 and the last time on Feb. 2016 to $7.

Or 40% more then it was in 2010. Much more increase then my SSA COL increase has been.

So that extra part time use receiver in the RV has gone from $60 a year to $84 a year plus any taxes you may be charged. :(

Somewhat off topic but when we got back to the S&B from a three month trip the DTV receiver in the family room was giving a 775 error and no amount of tech support (3 calls) would make it work so we have tech call next Tuesday. Our other receivers are working fine.

Here's the rub and the reason for the post: I have to pay 49.95 for the service call for a receiver I am renting. No such thing from Charter at our beach house.....

Rethinking this whole Dish/Direct thing.
