Dreaded DEF head failure
So, we took off this morning from the Gig Harbor area heading to AZ in our 2019 Cornerstone. Before we made it to Tacoma the DEF display lit up with bright amber icons. Stopped, called Spartan, and they confirmed DEF sensor failed. Now in Eugene waiting for Spartan to send a new sensor head to the Cummings dealer here. Sigh. I knew it was coming.

Sorry to hear you experienced this all-too-common problem.
If possible, look at the tag on the new DEF head and let us know what generation it is. The tag should look something like what you see in the photo below.

Good heads up for those that have not built the simulator and plan on a long trip with the OEM DEF sensors. They can and do go out at any time. Thankfully both of mine were at home, but having 2 failures made me a believer in the simulator units. Sorry yours put a delay in your trip.

Has anyone had a honest talk with Spartan about their experience with the Gen 5 (or whatever the heck the most current DEF head is called) DEF head at this point. I think they have been installing them for about 6 months....
What is the failure rate of the most recent DEF heads at this point?
Gary

The latest DEF sensor was the Gen 7. I believe Larry is asking for the new part number to see if Spartan is still shipping Gen 7's or if they have moved to Gen 8. I was hoping the number for the DEF head will be posted as well.

Chuck
On Larry's example label, the Generation is printed directly on the label.... Gen 6.
I am going to call Spartan later today and see what they tell me the failure rate is on Gen 7 or if there is now a Shaw Industries Gen 8.

Larry and I both had our replacements as Gen 6's. My 21 had a Gen 5 replaced with a 6. I have not heard of any failures with Gen 7 and do not know where they started them in production. See if they will give that information when you call.

Chuck, I think it was about two weeks after they shipped me a Gen 6!

I was told by Spartan that chassis built in July 2021 going to Newmar were gen 7’s.

Spartan sent me a gen7 mid to late April 2021. I think they had just come out.

Parts received
Got the def sensor overnight from Charlotte to Eugene. It will be installed tomorrow at Cummins in Coburg OR. No tag on the unit, but the bill of lading shows that it is a Gen 7. Hope that it solves the problem.
