Drive from Redwoods Ntl Park to Crater Lake NP

to get from Redwoods National Park to Mazama Campground at Crater Lake National Park, Google is suggesting going north to Crescent City (on 101) and then taking US 199 up into Oregon, brief stretch on I5 and then Oregon 234 to Oregon 62 to Mazama Campground. Wondering if anyone has driven this route and has an observations on driving it in our rig.

thanks

That’s a beautiful drive. We did two years ago with our 41 class a and Buick toad.

We also went from Crescent City to the I5 about 3 years ago in our 29 ft Class A gasser with a toad. Not a problem on this stretch.

I have driven from the I5 up to Crater Lake that direction in a car and as I recall, it is a pretty good road. There was a little snow when we made the drive, especially near the top. I think it would probably be fine with a motorhome and toad without the snow.

97 from 5 is the best route directly to Crater Lake. Several RV parks are west of CL so other routes through Union and others may be better for you. No need to take I-5 all the way to Roseburg.

Posted from memory instead of verifying. 97 is too much back track. While I-5 north to Roseburg and then east to the North Entrance is easiest, the route to the south entrance is prettier taking 62. It really depends on where you plan to stay and park as taking the toad into the park will be much easier.

FYI, 199 In Cali is on the restricted list for large Motor homes. https://dot.ca.gov/programs/traffic-...BOjjZw57sih62k

Very tight road with lots of truck traffic. It has the very real potential to cause a white knuckle moment with very short notice. Had a mirror broken off a E350 van one stormy night by a truck over the center line with a rock wall on my right side !

We've done that in a 42 ft towing, eastbound. The first 30 miles or so are worst, and yes, real pucker time. After that it got a little easier. We were fortunate not to meet any oncoming traffic except a car or two. Won't do it again.

The easiest, and safest although probably longer would be to take 101 north thru Brookings, Gold Beach, Port Orford and Bandon almost to Coos Bay, OR. Watch closely for the turn off 101 to 42 because if you miss it you will have to drive a few miles to turn around and then go east on highway 42 to Roseburg. Then 38 up to Diamond Lake area, a very scenic drive along the Umqua River that puts you right at the entrance to Crater Lake. All very easy driving in a large RV. I have been on all the roads you have looked at and it is definitely not a relaxing drive.
