Driving a tag axle will take some practice

I brought my new baby home today. A new Insignia. She drives like a dream. The drive home was awesome. Pulling into my tight driveway didn't go so well. I got stuck in the snow/mud. Had to call a tow service to drag me out. That was fun (embarrassing) Coming from a 40' gasser I thought I'd be able to negotiate my driveway with just a little more effort. WRONG.
I see more pavement in my future
The tail needs a lot more room to turn..

Lesson learned.

Coming from the gasser to this coach is like going from a bicycle to a Benz

I came from a gasser to our Anthem. In the gasser you sit on the front wheel, in an Entegra you sit in front of the wheel. Takes a while to learn when to turn; gasser you turn when your butt is at what you don't want to hit, Entegra you turn when your butt is past what you don't want to hit.

X2 !!
I know the feeling..Went from a 36' 454 gasser to the 40' 450 hp Cummins in a Foretravel with a tag...
1st lesson was that they put cruise control on them for a reason....

Congrats in the new coach, sounds like a beauty.

In terms of the close quarters maneuvering it is different. We came from a 40' DP and even still it is different.

When backing around a corner be mindful of your front corners. I find I get a more pronounced swing of the front end in this coach.

I have learned to judge when to cut the steering wheel when the tag is just a tad beyond (behind) the obstacle. To be ultra safe, you can cut when the drive is abeam the obstacles.

Practice practice practice.

Yes, this is going to take some time. I damn near clipped a tree in my yard. I was busy looking ahead and not in my mirrors, assuming the my rear was where the rear of my gasser would have been. NOT. If I hadn't gotten stuck I would surely have hit it. Thank God for small miracles

If you hold down the tag dump switch and wait until you can't hear the air dumping and then turn the steering wheel, the pivot point is the drive axle, not the center of the rear bogie (tandem axle assembly). I find that this is helpful when inches matter.

Aha, That's good info! I had it in auto. Auto = automatic dump in reverse, right?

Also dumping air out of the tag axle will give you more traction going forward with the drive wheels.. might be enough to get out of a slippery situation.

I find with the DP it is easier to back in when that option is available. If you choose this option keep in mind that the front end will cover a lot of ground in a hurry if the wheel is cut sharp. A ground guide with a two way radio can be VERY helpful!

I went from a 40' non tag to the present 45' with manual lifting tag. It goes in beside the house just as easily as the old 40' did. The real adjustment was in being able to see the front drivers corner. The old rig had a full size sliding window, the new one just has a small "toll" window and I can't put my head out to look down.

Humm... I went from a 36' DP to a 44' DP tag, and I really couldn't tell that much difference. Just had to leave more room for turning (forward and backward). Using the mirrors, side/rear view camera, and of course the DW giving crazy motions for directions, provides me with sufficient methods to insure I won't run into anything.

Out on the highway, the difference is like night and day. I can drive four to six hours straight and not be all stiff like I was with the old coach. 20 to 30 mph winds virtually have no effect and not even a wiggle when trucks pass. Smoother ride and so much quieter.

Enjoy that new rig.
