I also put my portable in a small trash bag before I hook it to the pedestal, tear a hole in the bottom to feed the plug through to plug into the pedestal, then secure it with electrical tape to keep rain, or sprinklers from getting the unit wet, and tie the other end closed.

(I like Clifftall's solution)

I guess no one worries about a plastic bag not allowing heat to dissipate?

I doubt if a thin loose plastic bag would add any significant thermal retention compared with the relatively think plastic case of the EMS. I can't remember by EMS ever getting warm.

I copied Cliff's install a few years ago when I installed mine, works great. It is easy to bypass for troubleshooting, out of the weather and secured in a locked compartment. Thanks Cliff.

Just to close out this thread. Progressive responded quickly and replaced my several year old unit with a new one. This one has a cover to protect the plug from the elements.

Satisfied customer.
