I noticed no change in the performance of the Cummins before or after any of the three ECM flashes when they were done, in mileage or power climbing hills.
Your strategy is probably all that’s needed, and that may be more than is needed.

I see there are two schools of thoughts on ECM updates. JME, call the Cummins 800 # with your engine serial number, the easiest location is on the white ID sticker next to the drivers chair. They will be able to tell you if any Campaigns or updates are required for the manufacturing period of your engine.
Some wish not to do anything until it's broke, it's your engine and you have paid for that privlidge. However a needed update may prevent it's broke and now I have to get it fixed...oh wait, I am in the middle of Wyoming.
A simple phone call "may" prevent a problem down the road, after all, they are computers. I wish I would have made that call before I took off for the passes and high country of CO. Another lesson learned the hard that I have tried to share with others to avoid the same problem.

Not everyone has had your experience, and have had a different experience.
I assume it is important to know all of it.

Gary, that's the point, not ever engine will be the same. A to call Cummins with the engine number and see if they have had other issues that updates were written to prevent future problems. RV'ers are a very small user of the 450. However trucks put millions of miles a year on them and find problems long before the average RV'er will.
Our phones are update monthly...no problems, but they are still updated to prevent problems.

Everybody will have their own take on this. I am from the crowd that says if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Just did an “upgrade” on a working piece of consumer electronics and now it no longer functions. My bad.

As a computer gut form way back, I'm part of the "if the update wasn't important it wouldn't exist" crowd, and update everything regardless.
As for Cummins, the only time I've dealt with the was a year into my ownership of the Monaco, 3 years old at the time. (So under Cummins 5 year warranty)
Limp mode and with a light, power1 checked codes flashed my ecm, related both fuel filters
Only charge was for the filters.

OneKnight, you had a problem that needed fixing. You didn't go looking for one. Just saying.

I had my rig into Cummins for work, they did an ECM update while it was there, I am torn on the ECM update. On one hand, engine runs a lot smoother, shifts better, and seems to have much better power, however on the other hand my fuel mileage went down. I did not ask what updates/changes the software made, but my guess is the engine stays in the upper RPM's longer to produce more/better power, does not seem to shift as soon, which in turn would make it burn more fuel.
Overall, yea I wish I had my old fuel mileage back, however it does run a lot nicer. Not 100% sure on the mileage loss, looking at my average on the display its down from 8.7mpg to 7.9mpg. Its not like I can do anything about it, had to be done.

My DPF cracked at 27K miles. They did several flash updates during the repair. My mileage and performance has suffered since and my DiGiCRtv chip no longer works well. It gave me plenty of extra power and mileage. Can't say that broke the DPF based on the dumpster full of them and the man sitting next to me saying he had three of them in less than two years.
High Idle time they said. Easy to do on a dump truck or RV.
In any case, has anyone here had Cummins upgrade the HP and if so what did it cost and how did it work out?
Oh yeah, extended warranty did not cover the DPF saying it was emissions related. Cummins said it was out of warranty due to whatever excuse at the time.
Expensive filter and repair at 5K. It regens a lot differently now too.

Taking my rig to Cummins Houston tomorrow for a leaking hub. I will ask them about an update of the ECM and report back. Has anyone put the new and improved Defender hub caps on theirs?
Stemco states no more window leaks so it must be true.
They are composite instead of aluminum.

Tor, we tried those and they leaked even on the ride home.
Stick with OEM.

Would you mind asking them about upgrading the hp on a 2008 400 ISL?

I registered our coach with Cummins and leaned that it had not been registered by the Dealer even though they said (ha ha) would. At the same time we joined the Cummins Power Club, but thus far not seen much from them other than a renewal notice. Thus far we have not received any update notices, but we will be at Mother Spartan in June. Hopefully they will have the resources to do so.
