Engine AC

Good morning,

Here is the information discovered during the diagnostic.

Multie leaks, both hoses leaking at the AC compressor, also found the high pressure hose from dryer to HVAC box leaking. Xharged system, then pulled 15 minute vacuum and ran leak test which failed. Needs to be repaired to continue diagnostic.

Feedback please

...for most RV dash AC systems, there are a limited number of places where a 134a leak can occur....hose connections are the most obvious....compressor bearing/seal and evap and condenser coils less likely....once you get beyond these areas....the trouble-shooting and solutions gets a lot more difficult [$$$$$]....

Engine AC

Why would they feel it would be necessary to replace the hoses?

The common leak areas seem to always be the compressor fittings. Sounds like you have an additional leak at the dryer. That is a short hose. If those are the only leaks(big if) it should be reasonable to get it to hold a charge and no reason to replace the front to back hoses. That however doesn’t guarantee a working system. AC systems are almost always worth fixing but they have to know what they are doing and not see the big expensive motorhome as a cash cow!

The inspection found that my belts are showing some wear/cracking, did not notify me, but when I asked how much, they told me 925.00 stating that the parts are most if the cost.

Called spartan, parts with free shipping 470.60, the most expensive belt is the fan belt at 311.00.

Sure would like the information for the mechanic in slidell.

Oh I almost forgot, they wanted to charge me 919.00 to replace my air filter, declined that. Bought the part from spartan and my neighbor replaced it for me yesterday. He had to access it from the top to pull it out, so I took everything out if the master bathroom closet and three screws removed and all done.

There's such a thing as a $311 fan belt? For my Cat 3126 it was $40...

All the belts on our coaches are common autoparts / truckparts items and can be purchased for a whole lot less than you were quoted. There is nothing exotic about them.... Just buy good name brand replacements. Also, you can Google cross references and cross reference your belts with NAPA or other good name brand belt. Most of them are even on Amazon. I carry a complete set of spare belts for the Cummins.... everything, in the basement. You can see the belt numbers and codes printed directly on the belts and there is a list of all belts for various vintages and models of coaches at the top of this forum also.

Its a good idea to have a spare of everything with you. You can also buy a "breaker bar" from Harbor Freight used to release the tension on most of the serpentine belts in the engine compartment, and with that, you can easily change the belts yourself.

On most belts, the part number and manufacturer is printed right on the belt itself, particularly on serpentine belts. Now, on my coach, the AC belt is a serpentine belt.... on some years it might be a standard "V" belt similar to one on a car. The part number on my belt is 3100189 I am attaching a picture of my serpentine belt, its part number is printed on the belt, and then a cross-referenced belt made by Gates. Virtually all these belts are cross referenced to many other companies that either offer them or put their name on someone else's belt.

You might have to jog your engine quickly on and off like it fails to start to bring your specific part number so that it is visible. Mine just happened to be visible without screwing around with it.

Your belt may well be different.
