Here's what you see if the bellows is failed completely. No real idea how to check for cracks before it breaks looking from here. I have not tried the bore scope approach yet. This bellows had completely failed at each end and in the middle and had multiple other cracks in the bellows at the bottom of the convolutes yet all you can see is where it completely failed in the middle and fallen down leaving the exhaust wide open.

if yours looks like this you are in deep shite.

Al

There have been occasional reports on here from owners that have stated that their bathrooms get exceedingly hot. Some have talked about the heat being so intense that it burns or melts plastic fixtures in the aft bath. Everyone should remember to immediately suggest to those owners that they fully check their exhaust system for this type of failure as a clear possibility is that a failure of that pipe could be producing such high temps in the bathroom. I will try to bring this up quickly the next time I see an owner post about very hot bathroom.

Can this, or a better option be purchased? I would like to just change mine at 7 years old.

The current replacement part from Spartan is different and more substantial. It has a solid pipe section and about a third of the bellows.

Funny they tell me my design was perfectly good but they changed it and released a service bulletin about it. That is what is so galling about Spartan. They know there is a problem with the part on my coach but will accept no responsibility even though they redesigned it multiple times. "out of warranty"

The original part if held horizontal in the installed position sags about 1.5 inches. So it is bouncing around going down the road as it is quite flexible. Any moron can tell it is a misapplication of that part due to the length, horizontal mounting and lack of damping material and armor (stainless steel weave on the outside) which also strengthens it by making it stiffer. The OEM original part will resonate like a slinky if you stretch it out to installed length and tweak it. A wave in the convolutes will resonate back and forth.

It is truly a POS design.

I think I have a picture of the new part on my phone but I will have to look. I did not have time in the shop to do all I wanted and the more pictures I took the more they hustled me out.

It doesn't look like anyone on the forum is familiar with the Recall or the NHTSA documents. It looks like it effects 9 years worth of chassis from 2006 to 2015. How would a service/repair shop like Cummins Bridgeway be notified of these issues if they are not a Spartan certified shop? Are the owners of record supposed to get a copy of the Recall notice or the service bulletin when its issued? Do you think this bellows is being inspected if an owner is back at the Spartan factory for service and their 144 pt check? (144?, I don't know if that number is correct)

That is quite interesting. As mentioned, when I posted my 1st pic, I reduced its size so it would fit here. Looking at your pic, I went back to my original pic and looked closer. There is some kind of ring going around my bellows near the area where yours broke, and now that has me wondering what it is (it doesn't look like a bracket or support). I have a couple bore scopes around, so I'll dig one out and take a closer look at whatever that is. In order to post a better pic of what I'm describing, I cropped my original pic to just the straight section and was able to increase its resolution. Now to figure out what it is...

This is the DEF cargo bay door. The plastic inner liner is melted away along with the battery cables, DEF tank DEF tank wiring harness, DEF tank sending unit, etc. The forward chassis battery is partially melted on the backside and you can see the label peeling off from the heat.

This is the replacement exhaust part. I exaggerated I guess as the bellows is still rather long but obviously shorter than the original and the tube section makes the part stiffer, also

Would you happen to have the part number for the new piece?

Looking at the website for the exhaust parts it looks like there might possibly be a better selection for this application.
Unless it's too early in the morning and I am not reading the recall correctly, it looks like Al's problem is part of this recall. I also had a 14 and never received any notification. It does say certain chassis, but if an uncertain chassis failed, I think Spartan may have a legal issue with a known defect and recall. Great find Jeanne, your talent shines again.

Chuck,
Is does seem strange to me with all the coaches involved in this recall, 2006 to 2015 and ISLs and ISXs alike, no one on this forum seems to know about it.

What responsibility does Spartan have in communicating this recall to owners with the fire hazard it presents? I just donít understand Spartan on this as they have on record our VIN number, and no one gets a notice, just let it burn down and we will deny any responsibility, thatís not right.

Richard, I have been scratching my head since I read that recall as well. I am not an internet lawyer, but it will be interest when AL sees Jeanne's research and talks to his people.
Spartan is long overdue for major legal actions with what they have pulled in the past with expensive defective radiators and now this.
