Angry Expensive oil change

I had some warranty work done at Cummins Coach Care in Houston, and while I had the coach there, I thought it would be a good idea to get some annual maintenance done. I had them change the oil and filters on the generator and engine, and lube the chassis. Bad idea - they charged $1276 parts and labor, with 10% club discount. Checked with the manager to be sure it was right and he said that was normal. 4 hours labor at $155/hour plus parts. Sheesh!

Was it just a lube job, or the entire annual maintenance checklist for the chassis?

He said oil change and filters on Genny and engine plus lube.

Half of what they charged you would still be on the high end. 3 to 500 is more the norm.

Two years ago I called Cummins in Ocala, Fl since I was headed South. Got a price for close to a thousand bucks for an oil change on the main motor and generator. I asked for a justification since the price was way overboard. That included an “inspection” which included the belts and other fluids. Needless to say I passed and will continue to pass for $1k. Speedco for a bit over 300 bucks which includes Shell Rotilla, Fleetguard Filters, lube, etc. I service my own generator with 6 quarts of oil and filter. Check the air filter and done. With Synthetic runs about 50 bucks for the generator. I will NEVER pay what Cummins and other shops want for an oil change.

Stopped in Oregon for an overnight in my wee little Prius. I supposed the oil could be changed there, until they would have charged $125 (American Dollars)
Yes I do my own work...that's why.
That money "they" charge is no Rip Off, we all pay for convenience. The stuff, material, oil, food is all actually free. We pay for the labor. The mining, melting and machining. The drilling and cracking and fracking . The picking and processing. Until we do all this on our own, we will pay. Capitalism is magnificent... as are all these ways to spend less.

Try this on for size. Photo taken at the parts counter of Rocky Mountain Cummins.
The shop rate for a walk in independent owner/operator truck is $150 per hour. Shop rate on Onan generators is $165 per hour.
Cummins wants to discourage RVers to concentrate on their heavy equipment operators' business which is booming right now because of fracking. They don't like working on diesel pushers and their private individual owners. Trucks are much easier to work on and their owners easier to deal with.
This is not just my opinion but is based on conversations with several employees.
Since Caterpillar is out of the RV business Cummins can do pretty much anything they want. Has anyone else seen $250/he shop rates anywhere else?

I wonder if anybody pays it. Gee, if they don’t want to work on RV’s why don’t they just say that?
