Where did you hear THAT? There are a couple of reasons for fast idle, but I never heard of DEF fluid build up shutting you down as one of them. Noel

At the ribbon cutting, Ted Cook headed the answer & question session and the question came up. He said on regular idle that the exhaust was not hot enough to burn the DEF properly, and it would definitely cause a problem. He said it was very expensive to correct once that happens.

I think he was talking about the diesel particulate filter and regen not DEF. Noel

You are right, I called Ted for clarification, even though he mention DEF in the conversation, he said that the partials would clog the exhaust filtration system. Thanks Noel for the correction, my apologie for misunderstanding.

DPF rather than DEF
Because of my problems, I have spent 3 or 4 hours Google searching for Cummins and other articles up on the web about our exhaust systems on these coaches. There is a lot to understand. These new "mufflers" are really complex systems. I have learned a lot. I have now counted 12 different fault codes in Cummin's diagnostic system for our ISL's sampling separate parts of our exhaust diesel particulate filters ("mufflers"). The build-up of soot is a big deal and there are a bunch of different ways to control it. Cummins has picked one of those processes which removes like 98% of the soot, but that then means that lots of things need to be sensed and lots of processes need to be examined. And lots of things that then can go wrong and jeopardize our vacations, itineraries, etc. for very esoteric problems!, and as Paul said previously, while computer analysis does some things very well, the world is a "follow the computer, pull and replace world", and a smart, experienced tech is still absolutely essential.

Gary. also reading up on the "new to me" DEF system, I read where there were 16 modules and DEF sensors that all had to talk to each other. One goes bad and we get a check engine light. Very complex system.

If you have a few years such as my 08 it might save some money to go ahead and have a manual regen done along with a flash upgrade which changes some of the parameters. As I mentioned, a regen is around $1000.
A replacement dpf filter just cost me $3200, two days down time, and fortunately my road service picked up the $600 tow charge. That was a ten mile tow.
The manual regen is actually taking the filter off and running it through a piece of machinery.
My extended warranty will not pay for the repair. So make sure you take care of those flashing lights.

Trace at Cabin Diesel advised me to be sure that I had the ECM updated ASAP as they come out. He suggested that everytime I was at Cummins to be sure they checked to be sure the engine had the latest update, since they are continuously bring out new updates as problems are discovered.

Clear Cummins ECM Codes
Is there an easy way to clear SPN 5585 FMI OC 1 fault code. This appeared after changing the fuel/water separator filter and had some difficulty getting it started.

Turn your key to light up the dash, but do not crank it to start. Press brake and wait until you hear 4-6 pops. By that time the wait to start light should be out. Then crank the coach. Then press brake hard once. That calibrates the brakes. Again, according to Spartan, doing it this way will prevent quite a few "codes".

I agree with this, but I bang the brakes two to three times to adjust, then we’re on our way. Haven’t had a problem in three years. YMMV.......

As we sit here in our palatal "gated" enclave (Taylor gave us the padlock code) @ Savannah Georgia Cummins waiting to get the CEL associated with SPN-3361-FM1 looked at tomorrow morning.
That is said with the highest respect to Savannah Cummins as we could be spending the night at the Circle "K" down the street!
I came across this older post and thought I would add my 6 cents! Leaving Jensen Beach Fla. after 4 months we were headed N/B I-95, stopping in Kingsland Ga. @ a Pilot to top off on fuel and DEF (DEF 1 bar down) grabbed a quick lunch and made it as far as the entrance ramp of I-95 when bells, lights and whistles went off.
Consulting with "Mike" at Spartan, it looks like the 1-After Treatment DEF Fluid dosing Unit may be the culprit...
We'll keep you posted on the results of our visit, hopefully it will be a quick fix!
