Floppy turn signal lever

In the on going saga of improving the turn signals on our antique '13: I was constantly annoyed by the floppy, imprecise Spartan turn signal lever. Very hard to 'lane change' without activating the full turn signal switch due to poor or no "feel." The detent between 'lane change' and 'turn' was weak, yet, when I tried to then recenter the lever manually I would always end up with signal on 'turn' in the opposite direction. Granted I have deteriorated feeling in my left hand but the switch was really floppy and loose feeling.

After some attempts to shim and tighten up the switch feel I broke down and bought a new turn signal switch (turn signal kit) from Spartan. The switch has been superceded with a new part number and is noticably tighter with better detents.

After installation and driving with it for a day I would rate it a 3 level improvement or better. It is no Audi or BMW lever for tactile feedback but it is a DRAMATIC improvement over the original lever that had only 18K on it. Afterwards came a 500 mile day with no missed 'lane changes' or over centering events with the turn signals. MUCH better!!

Anyone with one of the earlier coaches might want to consider this if you find the turn signal lever to be substandard.

I ordered the switch kit from Spartan PN 0978-KK1-86001 . It includes the complete switch, lever, mounting screws and grease for horn ring. It takes 30 minutes (max) to install once you have done it. The switch kit was less than $50 as I recall. It is a bargain considering what the switch consists of and what the kit includes.

Simply extend the steering column using the T&T function. The plastic shrouds on the column just snap off by pulling on them. The switch has only two torx screws (that require a 25 bit) and two wire connectors to pull off and plug into the new switch. It is a ridiculously easy change out for a large improvement. Easily the best bang for the buck of any mode I have made to our coach.

The additional turn signal lights were a MAJOR improvement in visibility, too. Per others'previous posts I added the three turn signal lights to the rear wheel shroud and added one to the side of the front fascia as previously described. Also switched the mirror running light to run/signal and modified the yellow cornering lamp to have much brighter LED run/turn light to the forward AND side chambers.

The improved turn signal light are what caused me to go after the poor switch operation as my gaffes with switch were REALLY obvious now!!

Thanks Al. Good to know there is an update kit if needed. Have to agree with the 5 turn signals addition and updating to larger LED's. WHAT A DIFFERENCE! A great safety factor with other drivers knowing what your intentions are.
