Follow up on my dead generator

Some of you may recall my generator issue. A quick recap for those who did not follow my thread

Genny quit working during my cross-country trip. I allowed the fuel level to dip to 13% I wasn't paying attention. I diagnosed it as a fuel supply issue. Replaced the fuel filter, then the pump and still no love. I was getting fuel through the filter but it was not reaching the injectors.

Once I returned home I brought it to an authorized Onan service shop. Unfortunately it is out of warranty so I was stuck with out of pocket expenses (again) The problem was a defective stop solenoid. Not cheap https://www.smallenginesprodealer.co...onan-333-0707/

I asked the shop to take some pictures for me. It required removing all the rearward skin. Once I get the pictures I'll update this thread.

Happy trails everyone

Do you know what the stop solenoid actually does? Have not dealt with this one before.

I know it can prevent fuel from reaching the Injectors

I will ask more tomorrow when I return to the shop.

Interesting... maybe it's purpose is to detect the voltage and stop feeding fuel to the generator in the event of a generator fire. If so, that sounds like something that would be well placed on the big diesel as well. Ok, all speculation. Thanks for the update .

A quick search yielded this
Diesel fuel shut-off solenoids transport diesel fuel from a machine's gas tank to its engine. A diesel fuel shut-off solenoid is attached to the machine's main electrical system, which can monitor and detect abnormal temperatures or mechanical malfunctions.

Sounds like a safety fuel shutoff kind of like what’s on our cars in case of a big impact

It cuts the fuel flow to the injectors to STOP the engine, when you hit the stop button.

It also stops the engine when it overheats or has low oil pressure.

That's the way you shut off diesel engines.

That's it.

What causes them to fail? Any idea?

I am pretty sure that this is the first time I have read about that problem or capability. Thanks for the information.

how to access the stop solenoid

When the gen is all the way out there is a considerable pocket of space to work at the rear of the gen once you shimmy underneath and then sit up behind the gen. Can the rear cover be removed from this position or did they have to pull more of the sides and/or top off first?

On my 18 Anthem the sides, back and top are one piece. The entire cover comes off.
