Freightliner Chassis

Here at the AIM rally there’s a freightliner Chasis on display. It’s pretty impressive and according to them and the Newmar owners, the DEF head issues aren’t effecting them as much as the Spartan Chasis.

Apparently Freightliner and Spartan are using different DEF heads.

Dave, if you can today, ask the freightliner guys who their DEF head supplier is?

My Tech at Cummins just came over from the Freightliner dealer here in FT Myers and he said they changed just as many over there, but Volvo engines did not have as many problems.

Spartan uses Shaw Def Heads. It was Spartan Tech impression that Freightliner use Shaw as well but....

At the AIM rally in FL I asked the Freightliner rep about their source. He said he would check and let me know. All I’ve heard is crickets.

Whatever anyone says, I'd nicely ask them to prove it (the phone number, name, and address). This is an area where all sorts of smoke is going to be blown up all sorts of orifices.

That was kind of why I would like to know what Freightliner is saying. According to a tech that spent 3 years at Freighliner and now at Cummins, he said they changed just as many at each dealership. Hardly any on Mercedes and very few on Volvo, the others, lots.

Would you expect a salesman to tell you that they are having all kinds of problems with def heads?

Would a sales man know of the warranty & def problems they are having since he is just in sales.

I will believe Chuck's tech over any sales man on this. Just look who would have something to loose.

"Usually" the Freightliner reps at the AIM rallies are upper management since they do a lot of sponsoring of the rallies. Last time I was at one, I met the President of MH chassis. They are aware of what is being said on the forums, it would be interesting to see what the "other" chassis company management is saying and who manufactures their DEF heads. If it's Shaw......well, we know what that bottom line is on that one.

I asked the rep and he said that Freightliner designed their own heads I asked national indoor RV and they said that they aren’t having DEF head problems on the coaches with the Freightliner Chasis

This is a Spartan issue. Yes some big trucks are experiencing problems but not as often as Spartan. According to Freightliner, to keep the DEF system healthy, don’t let the coach sit with a less than full tank. And, when using the coach, run the def down to empty before refilling

The rep from Freightliner assured me that their DEF heads are not manufactured by Shaw

The noise you hear in the background is a large crowd of motorhome owners who've suffered DEF Head failures on Spartan chassis coaches, rushing to NIRVC and other dealerships to trade their rigs for ones built on a Freightliner chassis...

The noise should be the lawyers all getting ready for court. If I had spent over 500 k on a new cornerstone, and it couldn’t operate as designed, there would be a battle.

Ok at this point I can’t tell what’s real and what’s not. Recently dropped a friend to pick up his coach from FL. There were a lot of coaches lined up. I asked the tech if they were as slammed as it looked. He said until they come out with a def head that works they will be continue to be slammed.

I have no idea anymore what real and what’s not..
