Last weekend I started the RV after an uneventful weekend of cold weather camping and because there was moisture along the lower windshield I flipped the AC controls to defrost as I stepped out of the rig and headed off the nose to go toss the trash in the dumpster. As I returned I heard a very strange noise at the rear and as I approached the back I smelled smoke. I popped the engine compartment cover and immediately saw sparks coming from the AC compressor and the clutch head was glowing bright red! Compressor had seized! I ran to the front and shut her down. I cut the AC belt and drove home without any further drama. Had I waited to flip on the defrost until we were underway I would likely not have heard that sound and who knows what the outcome could have been! Yikes! New compressor is here, new belt and dryer are on their way….always something!

Your compressor had extended life.

Many of the Classic compressor did not make as long as your. My 14 seized up in it's third year. Glad you made it home where the replacement prices were probably less.

$300.00 compressor and I’ll do the job myself.

There ya go. Mine was $1050. in Traverse City MI. I needed it to get home to FL, so I paid the price. Nice savings to be able to do it at home.

I didn’t need the compressor to work at all for the defrost and I assumed the belt was trashed so I just cut the belt…$20.00…no chance of that compressor trying to turn without a belt to drive it.

When mine locked up, it broke the belt. I didn't think a three year old compressor would seize up, so I changed the belt. Got that one too.

I have had two freeze up on my 15 Anthem. Once was just bad luck. The second time, a truck service company put way too much freon in the system and the excessive freon froze up the system. I believe that the service company never called TempCon to determine what was supposed to go in there and added about twice the appropriate amount.

I don't remember the amount of freon, but it was spec'd at a much lower amount than many trucks use.
