Generator Maintenance snag

So I went out to the barn today to do oil & filter changes and fuel filter change and air filter change. I watched the videos, and read the online docs but hit a few snags.

First - I use WIX filters and the cummins number in the "sticky" post, converted to a 51307 according to my local parts guy but when we got ready to put it on it was longer and looked like a tight fit. The filter that was on the generator converted to a 51311 so I bought one of those and it went on fine.

The video online shows the air and fuel filter change on a QD7500 mine is a QD 10000 and it is not even close!

I found the fuel filter but accessing it was not going to be easy. I never found the air filter or the spark arrestor. We spent so much time going back into town to get the right oil filter that we called it a day and I am back home doing more research.

I'll bet you spent a boatload of money on that rig.

IMO, you should hire a mobile service guy, that comes to your MH, and watch him do this service.

Pick his brain at every opportunity and learn from him, rather then a U Tube video. If he is not willing to work with you, find one that will.

Just because a guy U Tube's a procedure, doesn't mean he did it right. Mobile guys strive to maintain a reputation.

Michael, to access the air filter you need to remove the coolant reservoir and move it aside. There are 2 fasteners that come from the top of the generator housing.

It is very easy.

The fuel filter is best changed by removing the fasteners securing the filter, then working off the fuel lines. The only tricky part is starting the fuel lines carefully to prevent cross threading.

The spark arrestor service requires removing portions of the generator housing. Removing the housing takes some time. The few times I performed this service I didn't get any soots out whatsoever.

On the 10 and 12.5 K units the spark arrestor is not an add on unit like the smaller generators, it's built in to the exhaust system as Matt says.

To gain access to my spark arrestor on the 12.5 Onan I had to remove the top generator cover and reach in.

Michael, I stand corrected. To remove the coolant reservoir there are 3 fasteners that come from the top cover down into the top of the reservoir itself. Remove these 3 and you can finagle the reservoir out.

To remove the fuel filter, follow the fuel lines to locate the filter. It should be adjacent to the lower right corner of your removable side cover. In fact it's just below the dipstick. What you need to do is to remove 2 fasteners from the outside of the side cover that decide the black L bracket the filter mounts to. If you can find the Cummins symbol on the identification tag, the first fastener is right next to it. The second fastener is directly above the first. Remove these and the dipstick and you should be able to swing the filter and bracket up and out.

Call me if any of this is confusing.
