Genset maintenance

Hi everyone,
Looking to do a general maintenance on the genny before we hit the road. The biggest challenge looks to be cleaning out the spark assessor. It requires removal of the top panel which looks next to impossible to access all the bolts.

The oil, fuel and air filters are ezpz. I have done them before

Who has done this and what tricks can you share?

TIA

General maintenance is oil change, oil filter, air filter and fuel filter. Why are you needing to clean the spark assessor. You will have to dismantle all sides to remove the cover. Are you experiencing any issues with your genset? If not, just do the basic service. Reach out to any cummins dealer or NIRVC for further assistance with this isssue.

Bruce, I have only cleaned the spark arrestor once. That was on my Travel Supreme when it was 10 years old and was pushing 1,000 hours.

Sounds good to me. I didn't want to take the sides and top off anyway. Maintenance schedule called for it so I figured I'd do it. Glad it's not needed.

I used to do that on our '04 Allegro Bus with the Onan 7KW genset. It was easier to do from beneath the generator but I never got anything out so I stopped wasting my time. I think that's may have been a relic from the days before ULSD fuel came out.

At the top of the page stick for filters. I get mine at auto parts, Wix brand or at NAPA.

They are a PIA to slide out. Pay attention to how you manage to remove it from the bay. It will go back the same way. Leave the filter attached to the bracket and slide it out.

The first time you start it it may stall while the pump primes the filter

After fuel filter replacement, you can prime the fuel system by pressing and holding the generator stop button. You'll hear the fuel pump running. One minute of prime should be enough for the generator to start without stalling. Good to confirm no fuel leak after restarting.

Take care,
Stu

. Hi. Just took a Onan seminar at FMCA in Perry. Tech stated that it does not needed to be done anymore. Stan
