There are not a lot of campgrounds in the UP, considering it size. Plan on boondocking a few nights in State Forest Campgrounds or National Forst Campgrounds.

Watch how close you are to the Great Lakes, especially Superior. I had to move camp once because the wind shifted to out of the north and it was going to get into the 40s that night BEFORE wind chill ! This was in July !!

We lost the view, but did not freeze !

There is a wonderful campground called Fayette Historic State Park and Harbor at 4785 II Road,
Garden,*MI*49835. It has a historic townsite, harbor slips, a boat launch, a beach and five miles of hiking. I really want to go back, but that won't be happening for a while.

Couple years ago we stayed in an absolutely beautiful campground righ/t on the lake at Manistique. It was owned by the town I believe and wasn't cheap but it was new, beautiful, and right on the water.

Agree with several recommendations, Anne Osborn, Pictured Rocks RV, new city park in Manistique, I would add Mackinaw Mill and Lakeshore RV park in St Ignace. All right on the water except Pictured Rocks, this is a new park with full hookups. Some of these are a little tight for big rigs but we have made them work.

Probably this trip, as we have never been to the great lakes area, simple sight seeing and some light flat hikes.

Than ks to everyone for the suggestions lot to research for our pick and the attempt at a late reservation.

Hiking in Northern Michigan is really nice. Make sure to pack bear and bug spray though.

In late Sept, do the "tunnel of tree" drive, M19 from Harbor Springs to Cross Village. Great color tour route. Just move the arrow on the attached site to do a virtual drive.
