Heat of the aft bath in 45B Cornerstone

This topic of heat has come up in the past but it was always, I think, in the context of an owner who had lost his downturn tailpipe. However, this is different.

I drove in 95-98 degree ambient heat through most of Tennessee and Kentucky and Southern Ohio today.... about 500 miles. It was definitely hot and by 1 ish, I had the generator on trying to cool off the coach for the kitties and the DW and me. The center part of the coach remained pretty warm (kitchen area) even with the AC unit running full bore. We arrived at our desgination about 8:00 pm and moved out the 4 slides and I was absolutely amazed how hot the aft master bath was in this Cornerstone. Nothing was too hot to touch, but the granite on the lavatory was quite hot to the touch and the aft bath (with the door closed) was up in the mid 90s to mid 100s. It was amazingly hot.

I immediately said to Dee "There is something wrong with the coach or exhaust". I assumed I must have lost my downturn exhaust as others have experienced. Wrong. It was there. Then I got out my big search light and examined the downturn to muffler connection and the "muffler" to flexible hose clamp (was nice and tight), and the flexible pipe to the engine exhaust manifold and all connections were "on" and appeared to be tight.

Now, have others experienced this?????? I never experienced anything like this in the Anthem.... did the back bath get a little hotter than the rest of the coach, YES. But my cats love to go into the clothes closet after a long day on the road (We call it the "Magic Castle") as the bottom of the closet is small, dark, and confined and they seem to like it after a day on the road. Today, it was so blistering hot in the closet that we would not let them into the bathroom until we ran the exhaust fan for maybe 30 minutes to an hour to move some air in there. If this is not normal, and it should not be normal, then what could be producing that much temperature in there..... this 605 is a beast, but really..... that is nuts.

Any ideas? Any other common observations? All thoughts are welcome!

Gary

Gary, we don't leave the aft bath door closed, but yes the floor becomes quite warm. That big Cummins puts out a lot of heat. I'm pretty sure ours would be similar if we left the door closed. Any particular reason you leave the door closed?

Gary, the aft bath and master in our Anthem gets warm especially when ambient temps are that high. We also went through Tennessee and Kentucky in July and experienced similar things. My solution was to get parked by 4 or so and the run the genset with ac on for an hour before we arrive. Things get cooled down to a more tolerable level by bedtime. I suspect that's a compromise for having an aft engine. I remember when we had a gas motorhome in the 90s and the doghouse always got pretty warm especially when we stopped for the night.

The turbo on the 605 puts out a lot of heat particularly when it gets spooled up. Running it in the mountains or hard will get you lots of waste heat and a hot bathroom. Try a gentler foot and see if it isn’t better.

IIRC on the Anthem, at least, there are 2 or 3 AC vents in the rear bath but no returns. I bet that the Cornerstone is built the same way. Closing the door prevents proper air flow.

Heat is always transferred from high temperature to low so leaving the door open will put engine heat into the whole coach. Turning the exhaust fan on low with the door closed modifies that problem. It takes hot air off of the ceiling and allows cool air to come in from the ACs. When called for run all 3 ACs while traveling, not just the mid coach one.

Maybe Entegra should do what Country Coach did on mine and install an OTR cooling exchanger under the bed with controls on the dash.

Heat of the aft bath in 45B Cornerstone

What your describing seems about normal to our anthem... 90 plus outside temps and our mid coach is never really cool.. even with all 3 house airs cranking as we go down the road.. we can keep the cab decent with dash air cranked but that’s about it.
Rear coach and bathroom area always feel like a sauna when we stop.. it’s from the motor.. all our motor homes have been this way..
In the west desert temperatures are easily 110 degrees all summer but is dry unlike the south.. not sure which is better.. keeping the entire coach at a comfortable temperature in these kind of temps driving down the road just doesn’t seem possible in a motor home...

I can almost understand the larger engines keeping the CS hotter but not so much on the Anthem. Our Aspire runs the same engine and, while the back bath is always warmer (and we keep the door open all day), we've never had an issue keeping the coaches (three Aspires over the last few years) cool with all three A/C units running. I will grant that we are Floridians so our definition of cool might be a little warmer than most folks - but the coach usually stays within one or two degrees of set temps. Usually, unless we're in an ungodly hot day both the mid and rear units will cycle on and off throughout the day. The front AC runs all day whenever the ambient temps get above roughly 85 - or we are heading east. That windshield is just a big heat transfer machine. But the dash air and front AC has handled all the temps and kept us comfortable. Our preferred temp setting in the coach is 76 for AC. If your coach can't hold that temp, I think you need to get your AC units checked. FWIW, in our 2013 Aspire, they replaced all of our units twice and one of them (the back unit) a third time. But when they worked right, they could freeze us out!

To stay 2 to 3 degrees away From you’re set temperature on all 3 zones is amazing.. especially driving down the road .. it must be be that Florida temperature ... that certainly isn’t happening in the West.. when it’s 100 to 110 outside if the inside is 90 degrees that’s lucky..
Seems my airs are working fine when i am parked they maintain temp fine..

Check the basement aqua hot thermostat. One time we were getting it fixed and the repair guy turned it up to max to see if the aqua hot would turn on and run okay and he forgot to turn it down again. The lipstick in my bathroom drawers melted along with other stuff. The thermostat for the storage under the coach heats up the back bathroom too. Other than that we do have a warm bathroom after a day on the road but yours seems exceptional.

I have been driving a 650 Cummins for 8 yrs and yes they get hot in the rear bath. I have learned to leave the roof vent open and have installed the outside hood over the vent so that it will draw the air from the vent. the rear closet does still get hot but stays much cooler. The vent can be changed to one that monitors the temperature and will adjust the speed of the vent as the temp goes up. I also keep the bathroom door locked open when traveling. I guess it is the price to pay for the Hammer.

Thanks for the comments and suggestions.

We travel with the back bath door closed for no real reason and could open it. We also travel with the door between the bedroom and the kitchen area closed. That is critical as the cats can get under the bed through the big hole under the bed when the slide is in.... so the wife declares, the door is always closed to prevent them from wandering around and finding the hole.

Now, closing the doors makes sense to me as if we left them open it seems that all that heat would make the whole coach hotter than it currently is and like someone else, the only part of the coach that is reasonable is the front cab area even with all three AC units running full bore (in 98 degree ambient heat). So I dont think leaving doors open is going to help much.

Now, if the Cummins and the turbo generate that much heat, then I am amazed that coach manufacturers dont put louvers down the side of the coach with short duct runs into the engine compartment to let cooler outside air into the engine compartment. The idea of putting a bigger cover the rear vent (there is one already on this unit) makes sense although it would be dragging more cooler air from the front back into the bedroom, but that vacuum created by the vent should help.

I am just amazed that this "B" is that much hotter than my Anthem "B". It takes hours to cool off the bedroom even with the genny running and the AC on tilt.... and the idea of boondocking all night in the summer is out of the question completely.

I may try the vent scheme....

We've been out west for the last three months - Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, Utah, etc. many of those days were 100+. We still held our temps within a few degrees traveling or parked. When we bought our first Entegra we lived in Austin, TX - and spent most of our summers in 100+ weather. Not holding temps was why we got new AC's on that one. Sorry that I hijacked the question about the warm CS bath - but our coaches have not had any problem holding temps regardless of where we are.
