If it grunts once and reverts back to manual, the update has not been done. That is what the update did was allow more tries. I think your problems have been found at a lot less cost than new batteries. They're free!

Seems that all is good. Reset EC-30 to 12.1 volts, wife ran hair dryer and genny started up without a hiccup. Still plan to call Grover on Monday and arrange for the update
