How to tighten windshield shade brackets

One of my windshield shade brackets is falling victim to Arkansas interstates. It is loose but still in place. Looks like you have to pull the rollers off to get to the screws that hold the bracket up.

Does anyone have experience with the brackets?

Vance, I removed all of my front shades and replace the mounting screw with #10 Roberts (square head) wood screws. I bought a box of them at Lowe's. I had a couple of the sheet metal screws that were already loose so I replaced all of the front shades, DS and PS screws. With an electric screw diver, it went pretty fast.

To get to the mounting screws you have to remove the shades, correct?

Vance

There are 8 square drive screws holding the shade brackets. You can loosen them with a lonnnnnnggggg extension (at least 6 inch) on your favorite bit driver. After you get the last screw you gotta support the whole double shade.. The wires have a lot of slack on them but do not have disconnects. If your helper can help you lower the shade you can use a # 2 Phillips to tighten the end screws holding the rollers. If the brackets are loose on top of the shades, they also use a number 2.

Most you do not. There are a couple of corners that just those corner of the shades get loosened enough to get the wood screws in. Here are the screws that I used that have a square bit in the center. https://www.dropbox.com/s/4m6pz46dd5...56.44.jpg?dl=0

A road side repair can be done without removing the shades and I only had to loosen a couple of corners to do them all. One of the day shade did have to be removed, but I don't remember which one, but I only removed one side at a time.

Once the mount is down, it's a good idea to tighten the brackets. When loose, though, you can slide them to a different position and then when you remount the whole thing you put the mount screws into a fresh location.

Chuck,

Can you come to Weatherford toward the end of the week to do mine? You can help us move back in to the house while you're there! ;-)

I just want to tighten the left side for now to get home. Our next route is on I-40 in Arkansas which is very bad! I don't want it to fall on my lap at 62mph!

Vance if it is the windshield shades, you can put those back up with some #10 wood screws that should be good enough to get you home without removing the shades.

If I was close by I would be happy to help, I bought a box of 100 screws "just in case" and they are onboard.

I found the screws! I was looking inside the corners rather than on the outside 10-12" from the end. They are all tight so one less rattle!

I should have known; I often make things harder than they are!

Glad it was an easy fix. To avoid the problem on the next trip, change the screws to wood screw or loc-tight the existing screws now that you see how easy they are to get to. Good luck with the move back in.

Talked to the contractor, floors won't be finished until the 9th, won't be ready to move back in until at least the 11th. We will wander a little more..........

Might as well stop at Lowe's and get a box of screws. Plenty of time now.

#10's will do the trick. The #8 screws they used at the factory were at times put in with too much torque and stripped the holes. The plywood these screws are going into is about 1/2". Have replaced several of mine up front to prevent a shade coming down while traveling. I even used a black magic marker on the heads to colour match the brackets.

My front windshield is okay but both the side window shade brackets came loose. The driver's toll shade was being held with only two screws. We kept wondering where the screws came from when found on the floor but were smart enough to keep them. Simply by pushing the shade back we were able to access the holes and replace the screws. I used a long square head driving bit in a 6 inch handle. You can buy a whole set at Home Depot for around 10 bucks. You'll need them.
