I-10 to I-5 in CA.
Trying to plan a trip to the west coast - has anyone traveled i-10 west to CA and then taken I-5 north? Reading the cal trans website I think it can be done, but would like some input if it would be worth it - or just go north some other way? Thanks

Robert
I lived there many years, depending on the time of day, there are several options, you can take the 10 all the way to the 5, if it's a weekend day early, that willbe fine, a week day mid afternoon, BAD. You can take the 10 to the 15 up to the 210 and then over to the 5, again time of day is important. The 3rd option is to take the 10 to the 15 up to 138 then 138 0ver to the 5, this is probably the poorest option and longest option.
Hope this helps
Dennis

X2... We've done I-10 to I-215 to I-15 to 395 to 58 to I-5. Much easier than going through LA!

It all depends on if you plan to stop somewhere in SoCal. With more info can give you the best route. Have lived in SoCal since 2002.

It is very simple...I-10 to Redlands, then 210 all the way to north of Sylmar and onto the 5.
I would stay off the 215 and especially the 15 (which would be backtracking for this route) because of the north/south traffic and bottle-necks they create at every freeway intersection.
The routes on the north side of the mountains (north to 138 or 395) are longer and undivided country highways. These routes are not needed unless the time-line puts you in the LA basin during commuter hours. Strongly advise you avoid the area before about 10am or after about 2pm...unless planning the transit late at night.
On the other hand...going north through the Cajon Pass (I-15) to 138 or 395 to 58 are scenic routes, driving through the high desert. These are good if there is no rush to get somewhere.
Best luck

it's like Atlanta - always travel the cities between 10am and 2pm
we just did the 10 West cross county to the 5 North - no problem

I vote 58 over the Tehachapi's as well. Depends on whether you need to be in LA or not...or if you are just looking for the best route.

Whichever the route...if you're pulling, that means 55 mph. My sense is that it is enforced as that is how fast the trucks are moving. Second, lots of hoop de dos...dips in the highway about 10-15 yards wide that even at 55, you feel like your tail end is flying through the air as you come out.

LA metropolitan area freeway traffic never stops, it only slows down late PM through early AM. You don't want to be in downtown LA - where the I-10/I-5 interchange is - in an RV after 6AM or before 8PM unless you have no other choice.
The above route is best for RV travel day or night; I use it in my automobile.

Also fuel up before entering CA. fuel prices there are outrageous If fueling in AZ, don't use the truck island, fuel tax was 10 cents a gallon higher last time I fueled there.
