Ice maker froze.

Our Ice maker froze up in the ice tray area and would not produce ice. We think it may be operator error on our part. We like to leave the fridge on in the normal mode, freezer -8, food 38 degrees when not in use. Recently it was left it in this mode for about 6 weeks w/o being used and was frozen when we went to use it. Anyone else have this problem? What is recommended for leaving the fridge unattended for long periods. Do you turn the ice maker off or leave on? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

If its left unattended for weeks I'd turn it off. Turn it back on the night before you leave. By morning it should be nice and cold and ready to go.

Yes, that is a common problem. You shut down the ice maker down and use a hair dryer to thaw it. Empty it and leave ice maker off when in storage will prevent the problem.

I turn mine off then empty the ice bucket. The defrost cycles turns the ice into a block if not being used on mine.

If it is more than a week or two before we are on the road again, I kill the power to the whole refrigerator by the circuit breaker, and then turn off the water to the coach, and the ice maker. We force both refrig doors to stay open and we empty the ice bucket, but we don't do anything to the ice cube tray. I am keeping my AC on at around 85 degrees while we are gone and the AC evaporates the water vapor from the melting and drying ice cube trays.

Has worked fine so far. Now, if we are heading back out on the road, we keep everything running as normal, but the water pressure turned on, and frequent (daily checks) of systems on the coach (its sitting in the driveway next to the house

Cheers Pat
