Ideas for fur-babies!

Hey all...

We will be picking up our new CS 45Y in July and will start the process of transitioning from vacationers to (eventually) most-timers on the road. Only hitch in our giddy-yup is our 4 fur-babies...(cats). DW says NO WAY are they travelling on the road with us in our new coach. (Past practice had us using our MH for short vacations with a pet sitter taking care of the felines). As we spend more time on the road, that's not practical for our social kitties. So, you travellers with felines, how do you manage? Where do you put the litter box(s)? How does all that work?
Any suggestions (that I can pass to the DW!) would be appreciated!!!

Thanks!

Gregg and Jodi

Why not take them? I do!
Started with seven, then one had intestinal lymphoma and I had to say goodbye to him. And now one of the others is at the vets, waiting for more test reports now. May have to say goodbye to her too, only 5 1/2 yrs old and my late wife's favorite.

Wow, four? We have one little kitty who goes everywhere with us. We left her at a pet hotel one time for a few days and she was so mad at my DW that she growled at her all the way home in the car.

This is our second kitty to travel with and we have found that she feels safer in her carry crate when we're moving. On the road we put her food and water as well as liter box in the bath area so when we stop we can put her in there while we get lunch.

In a CG she is loose and her liter box and food dishes are in front of the drivers seat kinda under the dash. With this new cat liter I can't detect any oder at all. At night she sleeps behind the windshield curtains where she can watch the night critters.

I'm sure she would rather stay in our S&B all the time but we enjoy having her with us.

We travel regularly with 2 of our 6 cats. Engine starts, under the couch they go. As soon as we start moving, one is out and walking around, the other doesn't appear until 30 minutes or so after we stop moving. Cat pan by the desk, not the best location, and we're looking for an alternative. When we replace the sofa with two recliners, we're looking at building in a cat box between the two chairs. Others on the forum have done it . . . it's on the list . . . .

Love having our two with us on trips, unless we will be no hookups in really hot weather for extended periods of time.

Just remember to bring along carriers in case something happens and you have to evac to the toad!

We only have one, but the litter box question was solved with a plastic storage bin and lid. Purchased the largest/tallest one which would fit in the end of the bedroom closet. Cut a hole in the side and installed a night light. Biggest problem, we must leave a closet door open for access. Best feature, no dust from the clumping litter.

We travel with 2 cats, and we just cat-proofed our brand new 2019 Cornerstone 45B. The biggest problem with an inquisitive cat in a 45B and I'll bet most of the models too is that there is a large hole in the front edge of the bed near the back at the bottom. It is large enough for a small dog and any cat and that is a problem because it is under the bed and if they get in there, its a devil of a time to get them out, and if you leave them in there when you move the slide, you will kill them. It is safe with the bed slide out (as the hole is closed), but with the bed slide in, that hole is wide open and a real problem. I have modified the door that leads into the bedroom so that it locks when the slides are all in and the door is closed and no cat is allowed aft of that door with the bed slide in. Also, I NEVER move any slide unless we have our eyes on both cats during the whole process.

Now, the other real danger that we thought we had were the motorized three recliner theater seats that are in this new coach. We were worried about them getting tangled up in the mechanisms under the seat and we would cut off a tail or leg or something, so we modified the bottom of the couch to prevent them from getting in there. Its only a problem when you have the seats reclined. If you have recliners, PM me and I will tell you what we did.

Otherwise, they travel just fine. The male simply sprawls out on the couch and the female kneels down on the counter back ledge or one of the seats for the dinette. They travel pretty easy. The only problem that we have with them on whindy, hilly roads is that one or the other of them decides to throw up from "Car sickness".... so we try not to give them much food in the morning of the first day.... the car sickness is worst first day, its emotional more than anything else, first day of travel. We enjoy having them along and it has not been a big bother.

I have several threads up here with titles such as "Cat Proofing a Cornerstone" etc. Google them and you should find them.

Oh, since they are confined to the area in front of the bedroom door, when moving, the little box goes right across from the half bath door (in front of the pantry on a 45B) and when the slides are out, the box goes across from the foot of the bed, right in front of the dresser drawers. We put a small rug under it. Cats never "miss", thankfully!

We have one cat that travels with us all the time.
She doesn't care for bumpy roads and complains about them (we do too, for that matter), other than that she's fine.

We travel with three cats. Our Encounter is a bunk model and the lower bunk is where the litter box goes along with other misc stuff. We also use a modified storage bin for a litter box. The top bunk is where we have their beds. They each have individual beds. The litter box gets cleaned daily and sometimes twice a day. It is really a joy to be able to take them with us.
We do have a Temp Stick temperature monitor to alert us if the temperature inside rises above a preset level for when we leave them inside alone. We used to worry about AC or a power failure when we were away, but no more.

We are cat less at the moment but traveled with two for a bit, then one - at one point with four dogs. Our biggest concern was that area behind the bed. We really didn't want to close off the bedroom so we just stuffed pillows into the openings when we brought the slides in...not fancy but it worked. Our guys traveled well and learned to jump up on the couch as soon as the diesel started - and they stayed there until it stopped (their choice, they were free to move about while rolling. Like others have said, we made sure we could see all critters before moving slides. Ours are all trained to be on the couch or seats when slides are moving. We kept the litter box in the bathroom but I like the idea of putting it near the drivers seat - with the seat turned around for seating, that's a great location for it!

We have a 70# dog shaped human that permits us to squire him to and fro..

..we are merely a support mechanism for him. This was his response to yesterday’s drive. Note the carefully arranged pillow, by himself.

Three cats since 2010, now down to one (Sparky). Ours would all hide in various places once we started to move - for some reason the engine didn't bother them much, but the motion did. Gizmo & Chooey used to come out of hiding on smooth roads and sit on Mom's lap. Sparky just goes behind the couch and as soon as he feels the slide going out comes out like nothing happened.

We keep the area where the kids hang out sprayed with Feliway and have also tried Licks Cat-Zen Calming Aid which really mellows him out but is mostly not needed.

Echo the concern about hiding places under the bed slide and recliner, but that was never a problem for us. Also we make sure eyes are on them before moving any slides in or out.

Litterbox in rear bath (44B) which is manageable. Litter Genie apparently does a great job of eliminating smells - we have had more than one visitor ask why we don't have a cat smell in the coach so I guess it works.

When we have extended service (like at Middlebury) we do find it a lot easier to rent a hotel room, but that depends on the cat personality and how they deal with dogs in a waiting room.

In our view, the kids are a lot happier being with us than in a cage at a boarder, even if they do have to deal with a few hours of mild terror every so often - they live in the moment for the most part and we are forgiven immediately upon arrival.

Matt, that's a great photo of Theo! In that shot he looks just like a larger version of Lexi, who is also quite adept at arranging the sofa pillows to her liking.
