Come back in about February if you think our roads are rough now try them when they have about four or five inches of hard packed ice. That's why the population in Florida doubles in December.

On Sunday, I drove 31 from Indianapolis north to HY 20. The first 20+ miles or so north of Indy was terrible. It was all tore up, detours and very rough. Very slow going for me. The majority of the rest was the old highway which was a little rough but OK. There is a nice new road and bypass around Kokomo. The last 10 miles before HY20 was under construction and narrow 2 lane. I will definitely be taking a different route on the way back.

Well not sure where you are starting or ending but as far as I'm concerned 31 is a very good road now. I generally don't go all the way to Indpl. I turn west on HYW 28.

My guess is if 31 wasn't good --you will not be happy with the other options but new scenery is always good.
