There should be a variety of options for travel insurance you can get for travel outside the USA.

Wouldn't Medicare cover you while you are traveling in Canada?

Medicare appears to only cover in a few cases (3 or listed) as I read it. Basically if its an emergency, and they get to decide what's an emergency, then it's only if you are now too close to a US Hospital.

Rarely will Medicare cover you outside the U.S. There are a couple of exceptions, like if you're traveling through Canada, without a lengthy delay, to AK. Noel

For our Canadian trips, we have purchased short term medical insurance from AAA. They have all sorts of policies available - like for an American working on an oil well rig in the north sea.

That would be a call I would make to my gap insurance company. They would be the ones to tell you how your policy coverage works. They might have additional coverage for Canada.

Call Humana. I just became eligible for Medicare and Humana has a policy that will cover you while traveling.

You may already know this, and I believe it to be correct: Medicare is your primary health insurance, which is essentially not in effect when out of the country. Your Humana policy is a medigap policy that pays after medicare covers the first 80%.

If Humana has policy that covers everything that medicare doesn't cover when you leave the country, I suspect this is quite expensive compared to their medigap domestic policy.

Plan F (and a few other) Medicare supplemental policies cover 80% of emergency medical costs incurred outside the US up to $50k. This is coverage even though Medicare itself usually doesn't pay for outside the US care except for several limited exceptions.

Here's what the Medicare.gov website says about the topic:

Medigap coverage outside the U.S.

Medigap Plans C, D, E, F, G, H, I, J, M, and N pay 80% of the billed charges for certain medically necessary emergency care outside the U.S. after you meet a $250 deductible for the year. These Medigap policies cover foreign travel emergency care if it begins during the first 60 days of your trip, and if Medicare doesn't otherwise cover the care.

Foreign travel emergency coverage with Medigap policies has a lifetime limit of $50,000.

Here's a link to where this came from: https://www.medicare.gov/supplement-...nd-travel.html

No, my Humana is not a medigap policy. It is a direct replacement for medicare. I pay only the part B. They have some out of country coverage and Medicare has some emergency out of country coverage.

As for cost. I pay only the Part B to Medicare. I get some dental and vision with my Humana plan. It also covers me through out the USA. Some plans do not.

Most of the companies will send a rep to your home to discuss all issues. It was an excellent meeting for me as I was just about to begin Medicare.

On another insurance topic... I would get a proof of Canadian coverage for your insurance on your vehicles. A card that shows proof of US coverage won't cut it. A call to your agent gets it easily.

It is called: Canada NON-RESIDENT Inter-Province Motor Vehicle Liability Insurance Card
