Is the GEN 7 DEF head replacement the answer?

UPS just delivered our ordered replacement head. After looking at the invoice the DEF head is labeled GEN 7 which haven't heard of till today. The part number is DM01-1800F765. When we contacted Spartan to ask which DEF head we had, as we already knew, they said it was a GEN 5. Our coach is a 18 Newmar LA on a Spartan K-3 605 chassis. As of yet with 26K miles we haven't had any DEF codes and wondering about either save for replacement or be pro active and install now.

I would run what you have until it fails. If you have a back up def head and a scanner you really shouldn’t be inconvenienced

Here's a little information on ultra sonic DEF heads that are apparently coming out or possibly have come out. Please note that they may not be a drop-in replacement.

Maybe I’m not reading the attachment right but it appears to date from at least almost a year and a half ago. If that’s true then that should be from the Gen 5 or maybe Gen 6 era I think. What am I missing?

Will contact Spartan in the next couple days to ask about replacing the GEN 5 head and putting the GEN 7 DEF head on. Didn't come with any instructions for modifications needed to install.

Good info Tom - thanks for posting it!

Below is an image of the part number tag on the Gen 6 DEF head unit I recently received from Spartan and installed in place of the original Gen 5 head unit which had failed. As you can see, the tag is labeled "GEN 6" and the part number is DM601-1800F765 - the same part number as you listed but "DM601" on mine versus "DM01" in your post quoted above.

On edit, see my post below clarifying Tom's part number, which actually starts with DM701 not DM01.

Yep, that’s what it looked like to me as well. The document was originally written in mid-2017, so I’m guessing the “NEW Ultrasonic DEF Head Unit” it’s describing is what has been in use since that time or thereabout.

The other clue is that the older DEF head units described in the document have a float to measure DEF level, whereas the Gen 5 head unit I recently replaced and the Gen 6 head unit I installed did not.

Tom, here is a link to a post you made in another thread:

https://www.irv2.com/forums/f278/a-gen-6-def-head-just-failed-533184-2.html#post5719326

In that post you indicated the part number on your new DEF head unit is DM701-1800F765. As such, it appears the part number you listed in your post initiating this thread was missing the 7 in DM701. (I've quoted the first post in this thread above for reference.)

So my Gen 6 DEF head unit has a part number that starts with DM6, while your Gen 7 head unit has a part number that starts with DM7.

Kinda makes sense - imagine that!

Checked the other post and I can't see a mistake in the part number. Check the invoice again and the part number is DM701-1800F765.

Tom, the part number in your other post in the other thread is correct. And I'm sure the part number is correct on your invoice.

Check your post that is the first one in THIS thread - i.e., scroll back up to the first post in this thread you're reading right now. That is the post where the DM701 is missing the 7.

Contacted Spartan today and they say the Gen 7 is a direct replacement for either Gen 5 or 6. After looking at the the Gen 7 went out to the coach and compared the two heads and all looks the same. Will need to decide if we want to go head and put the Gen 7 head on without us having any issues so far with Gen 5?

Wow. I guess Gen 6 wasn’t the “fix” they said it would be. [emoji2357]

Hate to say it, but neither were, Gen 2,3, 4, or 5. 5 years with 7 tries, it is starting to sound like a government mandate...oh wait, it was.

After reading this posting and threads I can see being proactive and replacing a working older def unit with a newer model reasoning hopefully not doing so at some point on the side of the road. Although when on the side of the road and doing a swap out what type of scanner if used to eliminate the dash fault codes ?
