Joined the DEF Club

Finally, we joined the DEF club. It’s happened, but not totally sure it was the DEF head. Our fault codes were different, and the Cummins shop’s solution (possible) was to replace the dosing pump unit. Problem solved? Maybe not. After 10 days held up for shop time, parts, and repairs we were back on the road traveling from Grand Junction, Co to Park City, UT. A 5+ hour drive changing elevation from 4,600 ft to 7,000 ft. About 2 hours into the drive the DEF level indicator changed from full to 3/4. Initial though was the shop did not completely fill the tank. Then about an hour later the gage changed from 3/4 to 1/2. Time to pull over and see if I had a leak, but found the tank was nearly full. Not a good sign. About an hour later it changed back to 3/4 and by the time we arrived in Park City, UT it changed to Full.

Cummins shop manages suggested it could be a pressure vent issue in the tank or the precursor to a DEF head failure. Beyond mentioning the possibility of a gauge issue, Spartan didn’t have much to offer, but that was expected as there is little to go on.

Has anyone encountered an inconsistent DEF level gauge prior to having a DEF head failure? We have over 1,000 miles to get home and feel like we will be driving on thin ice wonder when we will fall through the ice into the depths of DEF down time.

Will you post the codes you got if you can? The widespread DEF problem that everyone is talking about has very specific set of codes. Other DEF failures can happen but not be a failed sensor. I will say that the erratic level data is kind of concerning.

As Archer said, posting the ordinal codes would help. Others have reported DEF level inconsistencies before the DEF sensor went out. They have been all over the board when it started to before I want out. Some went away and never returned. From what I have seen posted, no set in concrete answer.
On my last failure the 1761 code, DEF level went active, then inactive, but the 3031 and 3364 codes remained.

Based on all the present failures best guess is your def probe is going bad. Having said that I don’t think anyone can definitely say one way or the other.
There’s a post that says if you get the full def probe failure to not let Mh idle for an hour, don’t shut the engine off and if you refuel also fill the def tank. So I guess that means if you get the codes on the way home you’ll have a long drive with no rest.

The initial Fault Code Aug 2020 was SPN 4334 FMI 18 that Spartan tech said was reported as low doser pressure but within spec. The recommended mediation was to shut down, open DEF tank fill cap, and disconnect cables to the Dosing Pump module and wait for 15 minutes before reconnecting and returning the tank fill cap. This resolved the lit DEF Icon on the dash but returned multiple times while returning home. The RV was taken to an authorized service center who could not replicate the fault but found the inactive code along with 2 pages of inactive codes. The RV went to storage due to COVID.

After about 1,200 miles in the current trip, we had a DEF icon light on the dash. Within about 10 miles there was the DEF icon light and the Check Engine icon light. This was at the start of a freeway construction zone where all traffic was moved to one side of the freeway with no opportunity to pull over. About 5 miles later there was the DEF icon light, Check Engine Icon light, and words Check Engine all lit. As soon as we cleared the construction zone we proceeded to the next exit and then to a reasonably safe location to stop; Walmart. While entering the parking lot the coach seemed to “bog” down. Fault Codes were check and found to be SPN 2262 FMI 31 related to doser pressure and SPN 1569 FMI 31, protection mode – derate.

Multiple switching the ignition switch on and back off occurred as information was requested during the numerous calls. The coach was started once to move it to a better location in the parking lot. Then the following morning the coach started to move onto the trailer, and again taking it off the trailer on arrival in Grand Junction. By that time, all lights were and Fault Codes moved to inactive.

The Cummins shop found codes 1682, 3574, and 3714 with 3174 is a derate due to DEF codes. Tech found the dosing pump operating with an “odd” unacceptable noise and recommended replacement.

Tom,
Although this is a DEF issue and failure it is a different part of the system not the DEF head. The dosing pump is separate from the head and the sensor pack that is failing for the majority of DEF failures. They should be able to get the doser pump fairly quickly, personally I have only heard of about 5 Entegra's with the pump issue. Although your still broke down so that doesn't help much.
