Master dump valve modification

Someone tell me what’s bad about this idea. I used to have a freightliner chassis that had an air dump valve to dump the air out of the air bags. I liked it because sometimes I’d stop for the night and didn’t want to put the jacks down and I’d just dump the air and the RV would be settle on the frame and be very stable. I miss that option. So I checked it out and discovered that there is a 2 wire harness along with the regular harness for the Equalized system on the dash. The two wires are grey and purple. The grey wire sends 12 volts to the master dump valve to deflate the air bags. The purple wire sends 12 volts to the master valve to Inflate. I just took that harness apart and put 12 volts to the grey wire and it worked as advertised. So I’m thinking that I’ll put a momentary switch in line with the grey wire and when I hit it I can dump the air anytime I want. To inflate the bags I would just hit “retract all” and they would fill or I could use a double throw momentary switch and have one direction to fill and the other direction to deflate. Any thoughts on this idea? The first thing someone will say is “what if you forget to fill the bags when you drive off?” I ALWAYS hit retract all as part of my pre-driving check list and that sends a signal to inflate the bags.

With this setup, will the action disable when the coach is underway? It could get nasty if one accidentally dumped the air while driving!

I think I answered my own question after re-reading your post. With a momentary switch, you would have to hold it in position, correct? My Monaco have a air dump switch.

As a matter of good controls engineering, I would interlock your momentary switch with the engine-on signal. This way there is no way for it to be activated accidentally or by component failure.

Why couldn't you power ON, auto level, and power off before jacks can extend? In the morning power on and retract all.
Looks like this would do the same thing.

Yes, I have done this and it works. Just initiate the leveller sequence and immdiately turn the jacks off after the air dumps. Voila, manual air dump.

It does. Did that at Camp Entegra the other night to lower the steps.

X2 that works, done it many times. On the downside, the jacks are almost all the way to the ground before the dump sequence initiates, it would be nice to have a quick easy way to do it.

Thanks darjacob for identifying the wiring!

If the switch is a viable solution I would prefer it over short cycling the the leveling system. Waiting to see if there's a down side to the switch.

My Monaco had a Air Dump switch in the cockpit. To dump air the engine had to be off and the ignition in the on or accessory position.

If anyone is interested, I can tell you how I did this and which wires to use. But the result is I have a momentary switch that when pressed down dumps the air, when pushed up it inflates the bags. No need to do anything with the jacks and it only works with the key in acc (as another poster suggested). The jacks still function as they always did, dumping and inflating air if you use them. It's probably overkill, but I put diodes in line to prevent any current flowing back to the Equalizer control panel. Most owners will probably not see the need for this but I am very pleased with the ability to control the air bags apart from using the jacks.

Glad Entegra does have a way to dump the air. We lost a step motor yesterday and it is a long drop without being able to dump the air. Thankfully the motor failed in the Entegra parking lot, but at quitting time.

Sheesh, Chuck, you need to get that embroidered 'kick me' off the back of your shirt! At least it happened in a good place.
