Michigan Upper Peninsula

We will be traveling from Traverse City Michigan up over the Mackinac Bridge and down into Minnesota using US 2, 41 and 35. Looking for any information and advice on this particular route. Has anyone traveled these roads lately. These roads look scenic but appear to be two lane. Would it be wiser to travel South through Michigan and 80 West over to Minnesota. Thanks for any and all advice.

NO!! Don't go south through Chicago US-2, 41, 35 are all great roads. US-2, in particular, has some really nice sections with miles of sandy beaches along Lake Michigan. Quite a few 3-lane passing zones as well. And they've raised the speed limit to 65MPH.

EDIT: oh, and if you can time it right and like good fish - go to Timmy Lees on US-2 just outside of St. Ignace for lunch. Some of the best fresh lake fish anywhere.

They are stressing the fact locally that the speed limit changed will not be in effect until the signs are out up.

Highway 2 in the UP is a fantastic drive. Do watch for turkeys, I got 2 of them about 10 miles apart. Had to spend a week in Travers City waiting for a new windshield which wasn't bad at all.

If you have the time going up to Copper Harbor is worthwhile. Several things to see in the area and then make your way down to Picture Rocks National Lakeshore...we love the UP so post if you want more ideas. Just beware that mosquitos can be overwhelming in certain areas, especially in June.

We decided to go over the Mackinac Bridge and down US 2 towards Wisconsin and Minnesota.
Made it to Wisconsin today and what a great drive with so much to see.

We will make it to a small town in Minnesota tomorrow for an extended stay with family.
We thank you all for your travel advice and appreciate all the texts messages and phone calls.
Safe travels to all of you.

Sounds like we missed you and Natalie. We will be heading to Petoskey and Traverse City after the Spartan Advanced training class in July. Take care and hopefully we will meet again down the road. Lynn & Dan

I would be interested in some insight also. Would like to do the UP hey but when I tried to plan a trip previously the campgrounds would not accommodate a 13' tall coach. Too many trees.

Not to many tourist sights along US-2, but just west of the bridge there are several spots where you can pull over and walk down to the Lake Michigan beach. Frequently theses beaches are empty.

Don't miss Palms Book State Park and Kitch-iti-kipi (a.k.a. Big Spring). Very impressive.

It will add days to your trip but the Upper and Lower Tahquamenon Fals are worth it. Soo Locks is also interesting.

Stayed there the day the turkeys came through the windshield. Karen was to shook up after the second one to continue on. It was a nice place, I would like to go back there again under better circumstances.
