MIL/Check Engine Light SPN 3226 FMI 20

Our yellow MIL light came on driving from Santa Fe to Pagosa Springs. SPN 3226 FMI 20 Aftertreatment No. 1 outlet NOx sensor drift high. The coach was running fine through the mountain driving. In speaking with Cummings CS, he said that it did not require immediate attention but did recommend that I should have it checked out sooner rather than later as the issue could become worse.

As we were traveling through Grand Junction we stopped at Rocky Mountain Cummings Sales and Service. The technician diagnosed the problem and found the DEF dosing valve was partially plugged which caused the the NOx sensor to drift high. He cleaned the dosing valve and ran flow rate test which was perfect.

In speaking with the tech, it was his opinion was that I could have driven farther but eventually the ECM would derate the engine once the dosing valve was fully plugged.

The SCR recall had no bearing on this issue.

Thanks Herb. Yes, tDEF system problems and codes can definitely eventually cause an engine de-rate. The mystery is that Spartan seems never able to give you a hard number on when that is likely to happen so you are in the dark as to how far you can go before it needed attended to. Frustrating. Good yours resolved.

In speaking with the tech it is my understanding, the ECM will allow a sensor to fail for a while before it escalates to a derate. Your right no specifics on the length. Best bet is to call or chat with the Cummins CS to determine your next action. The CS is available 24/7, you will need your engine serial number when you call. FYI, your engine serial number is on the placard behind the drivers chair.

Herb,

Thankfully it wasn't too problematic of a repair. Would you be able to pass along the C/S number for Cummins, I'll place it in my "Hope I never have to use" file!

Herb,

Thankfully it wasn't too problematic of a fix negatively impacting your trip. Would you be able to pass along the C/S number so I can place it in my "Hope I never need file", but... "probably will need folder"?

Thanx,

Spartan can't answer DEF sensor questions as they are Cummins sensors. On my coaches Spartan has had problems answer questions on their own components. The last one being the digital dash with a constant ATC light.
