Mud flap causing damage to toad

I have been using the same toad for 3 RVs now. In the past we have had no to very little stone chips on the front of the toad. The past two RVs both had the grass skirts for the mud flap. With this solid mud flap we have been getting a lot of stone chips. Also, about a year ago I raised the mud flap up one chain length and it is about 6 inches off the ground.
These mud flaps look good, but I think they are hurting our toads.

I have just finished making a stone guard out of sun screen (from Lowes) and PVC pipe. The stone guard will mount under my tow bar, but I have not given it a road test yet.

Are others having problems with their mud flap?

Nope, no problems here, have towed the CRV for 2 years with no stone chips.

There have been posts about the solid flaps being too low and stirring up more road debris than they stop.
4" off the ground is a minimum; according to the manufacturers.

I had the same thing on our Allegro Bus. When you hit a bump the mudflap comes down and scrapes all the stones off the road and flings them at your towed. I shortened the chains a bit and raised the mudflap for more clearance and it was fine.

I raised mine from 4" to 6" before we went to Alaska. By the time we got to Whitehorse, even though I had a Rock Guard and a custom windshield cover, the toad was covered in stones at the end of every day. The stones were even bouncing off the rock guard and chipping the back of the coach. The engine compartment was also littered with stones.

On the suggestion from our wagon master for our caravan, I removed the flap with the intension of picking it up on the way back.
Well, guess what. No more stones and the mudflap is likely still in the RV Park in Whitehorse if anyone wants it.
I do not use any rock guard etc since removing the flap and have zero stone chips. My toad also stays cleaner than it used to.

The very best protection is a good set of flaps directly behind the rear duals that are set so they just clear the ground when the air bags are dumped.

I have the same problem. It also seem to create a vortex that sucked gravel out of the rumble strips along the fog line. Most of my damage was seen on the right side of the toad. My mudflap was an add on so I took it off a few years ago and no more problems.

I use the Roadmaster rock guard which is a mesh setup that is built to fit over top of the hitch on the RV and the towed and keeps the stones from coming upwards. It takes about a minute to install it or remove it (rolls up). I wouldn't be without it now that I have used one.

I have one of those, a BlueOx Rock Gard And a Custom Made Windshield Cover for a CRV that I will sell for cheap.
I have no need for either one. If anyone is in the South Okanogan, stop by and make me an offer.

Had no problems with my Jeep behind the Entegra - will take a closer look, but have towed it 12k Mikes.

I towed the F150 from MN to Petoskey to Middlebury and back home again without a single stone chip. But the trip to Big Sky and back peppered the front of the truck with dozens of chips. I even found gravel in the channel by the windshield and stuck in gaps behind the grille. I've also never seen the truck get so dirty.

I've been thinking about removing the rear flap but may try moving it up a few inches first.

In 2014 we drove from Ft Worth to Alaska and back with mud flaps, no rock guard, yoga mat across windshield, and a Protect-A-Tow. No rock chips or rocks near windshield wipers.

In 2015 we drove Route 66 with all the above plus our 'really cool' Travel Supreme rock guard. Numerous rock chips on towed and rocks by wipers.

In 2016 we are doing the Alaska trip again with all the above and rock guard removed. No rock chips or rocks near wipers.

Guess when I get home I'm going to have to make a decision on what it is worth to me to 'be cool' by having my Travel Supreme rock guard installed! ...Oh, DW just said I'm to old to be "cool" so guess it will have to go!

Robert,

You know those words "TRAVEL SUPREME" you have on the back are more than just cool! You are the grand daddy and forerunner to us all! Everytime I find one of you guys in any park I am staying in I have more fun looking at your Coach than any other RV there. Seeing some of the original bones and similarities still present in the manufacture of them today. I always tell me wife "come look at this Travel Supreme". You don't need the rock guard, you know your "cool".

Ron.
