Napa

We are heading to Napa in early May. Any recommendations for RV parks? I've looked on rvparkreviews but none are really rated to well. Any assistance would be appreciated. We are heading to see our son who is a Capt in USAF at Travis AFB and pilots the KC-10.

PS: He's heading to Dubai next week so prayers would be greatly appreciated.

Sincerely thank you all!!

I can't recommend an RV park in the area, but let your son know his service is much appreciated and he will be in my prayers.

Napa Fairground has RV spots and it's the closest to town.

I appreciate his service as well.

Cannot recommend in Napa. Frankly I don't go there any more, I find Napa expensive, pretensive, and there aren't any good RV parks .

Unless you have a specific reason to go tasting in Napa, I would head to Amador/El Dorado. 49er Trailer Village is a great park. The wine in that region is as good as Napa's at half the price and the people there are super cool. Reminds me of hanging around in Napa and Sonoma in the 80's before they got so big.

Napa is about 45 minutes away, Amador is about an hour.

Sorry I couldn't help you with Napa, but I really don't know of any parks there that are good. BTW, don't fall for the "Vineyard RV" ads, that park is in Vacaville, your son is closer to Napa in Fairfield.

While the subject is up, the Paso Robles area has dozens of remarkable wineries that are also down to earth, very good, and quite beautiful.

As my friend Paul Hoover says, "The wine doesn't care where it came from".

Try KOA San Francisco North/Petaluma. We stay here three or four times a year to visit family in the Bay Area and to attend SF Giants games.

Check out Flag City in Lodi. Not great but not bad either. It is about 40 miles from Travis Air Force Base.

Prayers sent! Please thank him for his service.

Don't know of anything in Napa that I can recommend, but most bases have Rv facilities that your son might be able to arrange a spot for you at Travis AFB.

The Napa Valley Expo RV park is great. Right in the middle of town, nice long pull through pads, level, very clean and quiet. We've stayed there many times and really like it.

I fully agree with Fred and Cindy. The RV sites at the Napa Expo are very convenient and comfortable. We love going there. But, beware that it is small, something like 28 sites. It does not have any services beyond the campsites. The hookups are very good, the sites are well maintained and there is a lot of grass.

Another option for you would be the RV parks in Vacaville. They are closer to Travis than Napa Expo. The one we stayed at about 5 years ago was fine at that time. We'd always choose Napa Expo given a choice. But, if we needed to be at Travis, we would opt for the convenience of Vacaville. Be sure to check your driving distances before choosing.

And, enjoy your trip.

Travel to Travis from Napa can take an hour because of traffic. Vacaville will be easier.

I live about .25 mile from the expo, and drive to FF and Vac often.

Hwy 12 Napa to FF is slow from 2.30pm to 7pm daily.

FIL winters at Vineyards RV in Vacaville. Tranisent is gravel near the clubhouse. A bit northwest of the main part of town. I would say 20 min to Travis main gate.

When I go to the HS just outside Travis, it is 30 to 40 minutes with no trafic. The AFB is east of Fairfield center.

The Elks Lodge in Napa has an RV park. All you have to do is join the Elks.

Start now it can take a month or sometimes two.

Elks would add another 15 in drive time... OP probably wants to be as close to base as practical. Vacaville is best.

Maybe years ago there was an on base option, but I don't think now, and the OP would have that info I assume. Can't be on base now without an ID or an escort, not even for the museum.

I don't think there is anything in Fairfield, at least not that I would feel safe at or recommend.

May and first part of June at Napa Expo is iffy. Bottlerock concert at end of month, with several week of setup before. We can hear the show from inside our house. IIRC the Rv park is not available for part of that time.

Also, Napa COUNTY Fairgrounds has camping, but it is in Calistoga so much further from base.

F4Gary. Thank you for your service!! As one who flew the RC-135 Burning Wind I really appreciate those tankers since we averaged at least two fill ups per mission. Given today's KC-10's age and that they are now maintained by contractors my son, in his short six years, has already had two engine failures and a major issue with fuel transfer that has caused home to do three emergency landings. Fortunately the USAF still trains for those emergencies!!

All I can say is 'things have changed' and gone are the days of superior military mechanics. I'm sure you have some horror stories as well.

Again thank you for your service!!!
