New Fill Tank
Today I had some extra time on my hands so I decided to go ahead and tackle a job that’s been hanging over my head.
My coolant fill tank had rusted through from the inside and needed replaced. If any of you have a tank rusting like this, with reasonable mechanical skills, you can do this job yourself.
I drained the entire system of coolant and replaced with new. It took 9 gallons so far. I’m sure I’ll be adding to the system as all the air works out.

I see you have a 15 coach.... how long ago did you realize you had an expansion tank corrosion problem?
Also, what do you think the main components set you back in cost?

This last fall I noticed the tank leaking. I tried J.B.Weld but it still leaked so I ordered the tank from Spartan. I think I paid $606 for tank itself and then the 9 gallons of coolant.
I was 4 months out of the 5 year warranty when the leaks started. I also had a freeze plug rust out last year

I changed mine after I saw some rust in the neck. Was an easy change after I ordered a new sensor to put in as I broke the other one getting it out.

Good Heavens ............................. $600 plus for that metal tank???? Yah gotta be kiddin' !!! There has to be someone else who makes that tank for about $100. Aftermarket companies, PAY ATTENTION TO THIS !
Wow, the price gougers are certainly at work in the motorcoach business....

Isn't the coolant loaded with stuff to prevent this very thing? How old was the coolant? Do you happen to know the ph?

That's what I thought too. My coach is a 2015, in 2016 the radiator was replaced so all coolant was replaced. In 2018 I had a freeze plug rust out and at that time cummins again replaced the coolant. Cummins tried telling me that the freeze plug rusting was due to bad coolant until they looked at the records and saw that they had replaced the coolant 2 years prior. Then this past fall the purge tank rusted out.
My coach has NEVER had coolant older than 2 years old due to failure of either the radiator, freeze plug or now the purge tank. I did replace the coolant with "Final Charge pre-mixed" as is required by the manufacturer.

The original tank was supposed to be stainless. I know that they are fairly heavy for the size of the tank. I also had a radiator replaced so the coolant cant be that old.

Wierd.
Glad I caught mine before the 5 years...
I called spartan and said "hey, send a cooling package to Buddy Gregg in Knoxville I got a bad radiator.
And they said "Sure, OK"
And then I said "did I hear the overflow tanks rust out?
And they said "Yea, we'll send that too."
And I said "Did I hear when you try to get the sensor out of the old tank it breaks?"
And they said "Yup, it's in there."
