They 'launched' a new unit in January 2021. I'm guessing gen7. I received a gen 6 in late January 2021. Why not the gen 7, I know the answer. Eight months and almost 20000 miles later I still cringe every time I start up. There really should be a recall to replace all units...just saying!

Gee, I feel so bad that their customer service team and supply chain team had to work such long hours. Iím sure the hours that owners spent broke down or altering plans because of a failed def head pales in comparison to all those hours those poor teams spent. Well, we can all find comfort in knowing that they pride themselves in exemplary customer service.

Has anyone been able to use the link to access the Cummins Lamp Identification PDF? It is hard to read in the email so I would like to access the source.

If you follow this link: https://mailchi.mp/f6c66c008a33/impo...6?e=47412d12ce , the email will open as a web page that should make the Engine Lamp Identification Guide easily visible.

I guess the Cummins link will allow you to find, in some obscure location (which I've been unable to find), the Engine Lamp Identification Guide.

Take care,
Stu

BTW US 89 & 287 were not much fun and made me wish for 605 HP!

Somehow I stumbled onto this:

Looks like the same thing that was posted in the email.

Does anyone have any information on this "shield"? Did anyone who replaced (or purchased as spare) DEF head notice this new shield?

Any what aspect of the environment are they shielding the sensors from? The unit is submersed in DEF fluid, so how do you shield the sensor while still allowing them to evaluate the fluid properties? No information provided by Spartan.

Also, Spartan says they "have seen significant improvements in sensor reliability based on this design with almost zero field failures". Almost zero failures??? Many of the existing DEF Heads have failed after a few years so how valid is this statement?

I had the same questions. Is this is the temperature test a few of us did showing that DEF temperature do reach what has been said to be the dangerous 125 degrees when traveling in warmer climates? If this is the "shielding" they have come up with? Why has it take 5 years of failed DEF heads? Is it finally the customers that had to do all of the complaining with the government agencies before they realized the customers are right? I just find it hard to believe that the R&D development team of Shaw Development has been non existent for 5 years until your group in a couple of short week figured out how to correct the problem.

Maybe it's me, but I just can't get a warm fuzzy feeling from this attempt to pacify customers that had their summer travel plans ruined along with the associated costs.

Funny when you think that all the Customer Service team and the Supply Chain team GOT PAID for all the hours they worked with the several hundred thousand dollars that YOU PAID for the experience.

Why so long before they finally make a statement?

So I am guessing that at least 2 of the new sensors have failed out of how many chassis made since January 2021 and they think this is a good think?

Thatís pretty funny. You think any of those folks are getting paid enough to buy a $400k+ motor home? Do you really think these people control the supply chain or can force chip suppliers to get off the pot and get your part on the container ship so you can get to Branson on time? You sound like the person who yells at speaker at Chik filet because the college kid making $7/hr wonít give you 10 extra sauces.

At Spartan RV Chassis, we continue to make improvements to our DEF system supplied by Shaw Development, with primary focus on the DEF sensor. In January 2021, we launched a DEF sensor with greater reliability which has a shield around the DEF sensor to protect it in its environment. This new sensor was launched for both installation in production units and for field service replacement. We have seen significant improvements in sensor reliability based on this design with almost zero field failures.

In April of 2021, alongside many in the auto industry, we were impacted by the global chip shortage. This global shortage impacted the supply of components utilized in the Shaw DEF system, significantly impacting our supply of sensors and complete DEF systems for both new vehicle production and service. We were placed on supply constraint and have been managing the situation as best as possible since that time to minimize the impact to our customers, which has included long hours from our customer service and supply chain teams.

We pride ourselves in exemplary customer service, and it is a core value for our business. The last few months have been a real challenge for our team and our customers alike. We apologize for any inconvenience the DEF situation has caused our customers.

We are beginning to see major improvements in our component supply base and corresponding parts/product availability. Our goal is to eliminate our DEF parts availability issues by the end of September. To that end, we will continue to work with our service centers and coach OEM partners to address all outstanding customer issues as they arise. While this DEF system and supply issues have not been specific to Spartan, we are working with our industry partners to address the situation. We have worked closely with Cummins, the RVIA and directly with the EPA to provide options for relief to RV owners experiencing DEF system failures. We are hopeful that if agreed to and adopted, these measures could lessen the impact this system failure has had on the RV industry.

We will keep you appraised of developments as they occur in the near term as we look to put this issue behind us.

Moving forward If you experience any of the following fault codes, please contact Spartan RV Chassis at (800) 543-4277 and we will help you through the next steps you need to take with your coach.
  • SPN 3364 FMI 9 (Cummins fault code 3868) - Aftertreatment diesel exhaust fluid quality- Abnormal update rate.
  • SPN 1761 FMI 9 (Cummins fault code 4677) - Aftertreatment diesel exhaust tank level - Abnormal update rate.
  • SPN 3031 FMI 9 (Cummins fault code 4572) - Aftertreatment diesel exhaust fluid tank temperature- Abnormal update rate.

Also, please see the Cummins Engine Lamp Identification Guide pictured below or visit their website at www.cumminsengines.com. This is the process the engine will go through when the DEF sensor sends a fault code to the dash. Your motorhome is not equipped with a switch to perform a parked regeneration. If your engine aftertreatment needs a forced regeneration, please contact your local Cummins service provider, or contact Spartan RV Chassis @ (800) 543.4277 for assistance with locating.

Enjoy
It's never Spartan's fault. I really like paragraph #3, it leaves me feeling warm and fuzzy.

Many of us have not forgotten the radiators with the number of people that were charged for their faulty product after the 3 year warranty.

JMO of why it is so important for NHTSA to issue a recall, they don't expire. However they have to have a working item to make a recall work. It is time the govt forces that issue as well. If DEF sensors can work in Ford, Chevy and Dodge. they can work in Spartan too.
